When people enter your life, you never know why. When you allow yourself to be authentic, everything in your life can and will flourish. Over two years ago I met someone who is now a true, very close, and trusted friend. This friend, Caitlin Bowers, has been there for me and my family, always. Caitlin has raised my youngest daughter, Caitlin and her parents took my youngest daughter with them to a variety of different outings while I was at work, my family and Caitlin's are together every Friday night for Shabbat. Last week on July 12, 2016, Caitlin, her sisters (Bryna, Temma, Hayley), and their
Mom (Mickey)lost a key component of their family, Saul. Not only was Saul Caitlin, Bryna, Temma, and Hailey's dad and Mickey's husband, Saul was a loved friend, son, and grandfather. I cannot express the true pain that this family has faced so unexpectedly. All I know is that each member of the family has been there for the other in this time and their love is palatable.

I have felt truly useless in this process and then today I thought I can do something. I decided to fundraise in order to somehow impact the sudden expenses the family has incurred.

1/18 I hope Mickey and the girls are doing ok. This is a terrible loss for everyone. I know how much they are missing Saul. How much he was loved by all. Joel and I are still grieving over Saul's passing. We can't believe it. We are thinking of him every day. The last time we spoke to him was this past June on our birthdays, while he was travelling to see his family. He sounded so happy. Joel loved Saul from childhood to adult hood. Has great memories of him. My best wishes for Mickey and her family. I hope they are all doing well. Sincerely, Suzy Goldberg Joel Goldberg Sarasota, Fl.

I am very sadden to hear about Saul's passing. My husband Joel grew up with him. They were dear friends from a very early age. They spent lots of time in each other's houses in Phila. and were together often as children. There was a great love there. Saul would call Joel every birthday in June when they were adults. They were both born in the same month and I believe same year. Saul had called this past June so excited he was travelling extensively with Mickey all over the West Coast. He sounded so happy. So thrilled to be a grandpop and visiting his daughters at their homes. Joel and I are shocked and very sadden. We will miss Saul very much. We looked forward to his phone calls on their birthdays. He was a very special person. Wonderful personality and kind. A breath of sunshine. He will not be forgotten. Joel loved him so much and will miss him terribly. We feel so badly for Mickey. We know how much she loved him. Mickey is a good person. Saul will be missed terribly. Joel loved him so much. Especially when he was laughing. I wish I could give more at this time. It doesn't seem like enough to represent all that Saul meant to my life.

(I've already posted this letter on Saul's Facebook page but want to be sure you see it.) Dear Mickey and daughters, There are some people who touch your life in ways that last a lifetime. You don’t know me. But I want you to know that Saul was one of those people for me. The last time I saw Saul I would have been over 40 years ago, when I around 13 years old. I was a camper at Golden Slipper starting at age 8. I was always one of the few campers who stayed the whole summer, 9 weeks. It’s no understatement to say Slipper was the highlight of my childhood. Due to my family situation I went for free, and it saved me from summers sitting on the stoop of my house in northeast Philly while my single mother worked. I know you’ve heard all about it, but Golden Slipper was like family for many of us. I had a tumultuous childhood, and camp was a safe haven for me. I idolized the counselors who were like the big brothers and sisters I never had, and remembered Saul, Alan, Bill, Gary and others as I grew into adulthood. I reconnected with Saul through the Golden Slipper Facebook page several years ago. It wasn’t surprising to me that this crew of counselors had remained good friends. I admit my first pre-teen crush was on Saul, a wiry, goofy, funny, warm, approachable high school/college student who I looked forward to seeing year after year. His goal was to make campers happy and he succeeded. Seems crazy after all these years, but I still remember how he made us laugh in the dining hall and with his onstage antics, how he helped our team win the camp Olympics with his creative lyrics to songs and by being the fastest counselor in the races. It was a joy to reconnect with Saul many years later. Again no surprise he stayed true to his youthful self-- his warmth, enthusiasm and big heart showed through everything he posted about the family he loved so much. He continued to know how to make people smile with his whimsical cross country adventure stories and excessive grandson postings. It was with shock and disbelief that I read of Saul’s passing. It wouldn’t have been appropriate to have ever told him all that he meant to me. So I’m telling you. I wasn’t able to be a counselor at Golden Slipper when I got older, I needed to earn as much as I could to go to college. But my years at Slipper inspired me and shaped me. Today I teach creative writing and drama. As an adult, I guide middle schoolers to write and perform their own school play each year. As a child, I learned how much it meant to have kind and caring role models from wonderful counselors like Saul. May it be some comfort to you in this dark time to know that his legacy lives on in the many people he touched such as me. In sympathy, Beth Shuman Ballentine
