Mike Hanna  PRESCOTT, AZ
HI, My name is Mike Hanna. I have been an avid mountain biker and bicycle mechanic since 2003. In March of 2010 I had a crash while riding in  Monterey, CA  that left me with a broken collar bone and knocked me unconcious. After a couple months the collar bone healed up and I went back to life as usual, riding and working on mountain bikes,

One morning in November 2011 I was sitting on the couch waiting for coffee to brew, next thing I know I am waking up in an ambulance halfway into town. I had experienced my first grand mal seizure, what would become the first of many. I have consulted with many doctors and nuerologists who all agree that the seizures are being caused by a traumatic brain injury sustained in my crash in 2010, and that there is no treatment other than anti-convulsant drugs, which so far have proven to have limited effectiveness as I continue to have seizures. The anti-convulsants limit the seizures from a couple a day to a couple a year, with no way to predict when one will occurr.  All of this has led to a mounting pile of medical bills and emergency room visits.

On November 16th of this year I woke up in the hospital to find that I had a seizure at work and had fallen hit my head and broken my other collar bone in four places requiring surgery to repair it on top of the new emergency room bill.  I work at a small bike shop in Prescott, AZ, and have been a bike mechanic for the last 14 years. Mountain biking has been more than a hobby to me, it has been my lifestyle.  A career as a bike mechanic is one chosen out of passion for the sport, not the pay and benefits, which are plenty to live off but not enough to afford health insurance. My wife is a 7th grade social studies teacher, also a career choice of passion, and her insurance does not cover me.

While all this has been going on I have been trying to live my life as normal, continuing to ride, enjoying my seven mile ride into town on national forest trails to get to work everyday. I am faced with having to make  some serious lifestyle changes, as well as not being able to drive. I have tried to get insurance, disability, you name it and I make just enough to not be able to afford any packages that make sense.  The medications keep the frequency of my seizures just outside often enough to  qualify for disability. I am caught in the middle with no end in sight and a formidable stack of bills piling up on top of the $250 a month my meds cost.

The money I hope to make with this campaign will greatly help me pay for my surgery, get my emergency room tab paid up and find some kind of insurance that doesn't cost $900 a month and actually pays for any of medical needs. It will also help with the coming lifestyle changes that stem from the brain injury-not being able to ride or drive. Anything you can give will be so greatly appreciated!

Update 7

It's been a month since I posted an update so, here it goes! I think my shoulder is right on schedule. I have been able to move my arm around a bit for the last couple of weeks, still working on getting some range of motion back. There is still a bit of swelling and overall weirdness as the muscles and such get used to the hardware they engage with now. It is a strange feeling having something that is not part of your body under your skin, but I am noticing improvements everyday. I have also been able to work a little bit more. Getting some hours has been good, but it has also been good just to get out of the house and see some friends. I was starting to get a bit of cabin fever! I want to thank you all again for donating. Your support made getting through all this possible. Big thanks to the jerks at Team Seagal and the rest of the St Louis mountain bike community for, well, being jerks!!
Thanks again everyone,
Mike

Went to the Orthopedic Dr on Tuesday for follow up x rays and to see about starting to rehab my shoulder. The plate and hardware have kept everything in place and I am out of the sling now, still have to wait 2 more weeks to start moving my arm around and try to regain some range of motion. He said I should be able to move it pretty much like normal by 6 weeks from now, so I guess I am about halfway through. 12 days with no seizures, time will tell if the modifications to my medications are going to work, so far so good. Thanks for all your support, really made getting through this possible!

Had another seizure this morning. Felt light headed right after I got out of bed. Mentioned it to my wife then sat down, woke up in an ambulance on the way into town. This is the first time I have had enough of a warning to get to a safe spot, and it's a good thing. I hate to think what would have happened if I had fallen on my collar bone again. After my last seizure my neurologist increased my medication, which now seems to have increased the frequency of my seizures. Not sure what to do now, I have tried a few medications now with little success. Hopefully I am able to figure something out soon. Thanks again for all your support everyone!

Just wanted to take a minute and wish you all a happy new year and thank everyone for your support. One week left in the sling according to plan. Hopefully the bone has become more solid and I can start to rehab my shoulder a bit. Definitely feeling better than a few weeks ago!
Thanks again!
