Sunday morning, March 18th, 2018, I was approached by Jerry & Amy of J&A at the Shamrock Marathon afterparty with some terrible news that one of our NERC leaders & beloved friend Michael Rowland collapsed at the finish line of his first Half Marathon & was rushed to the ER. Being the last person to run in a few blocks with him as I cheered him on just before mile 13, it was evident he was in distress but was only complaining of hip/leg pain. Never would anyone expect what was to happen next .

Upon our arrival to see him, we learned he was then admitted into the ICU & was undergoing a medically induced coma for potentially a few days while his body rests. Every preliminary test the doctors gave him showed no sign of a weak heart & his brain scan came back normal so they’re stumped as to why this could of happened. As we met with his loving parents & brother Tim, we heard the shocking news Mike's heart stopped beating for 9 minutes after his collapse.  Paramedics were able to administer CPR within 30 secs after he went down thanks to this happening at the finish line by the speedy standby emergency medical crews.

Monday, March 19th, Mike's condition was stable but under a medically induced coma. He slipped out of it for a few minutes last night & was very uneasy so doctors administered more medicine to knock him back out.  All updates after this have been posted in the update tab on this Gofundme page & the @northendrunclub Instagram story.

The family has requested no visitors until he's cleared but thanks the community for keeping them in your thoughts & prayers!

Mike is most known for his job bartending at Lynnhaven Pub & just recently started a new job at Towne Bank as a Mortgage Loan Officer. He's a natural born hustler & hands down one of the hardest working guys I know. Unfortunately like many service industry people, if he's not working he's not making money. Though we're not completely sure of his recovery time, we do know he's going to be out of work for some time once cleared & we all can imagine how astronomical his medical bills will be. We don't want that burden on him.

On behalf of myself & all his supportive friends/family, I want to thank you for any & all donations received toward his medical bills. We're not exactly sure the total amount so the goal will change but anything will help!

Tomorrow Tuesday, March 20th, 2018 at 6pm, The Shack is opening up their newly remodeled Festival Center to the public & is donating $3 for every $6 crush purchased toward's Mike's fundraiser. I will also be there with a table & computer taking donations in person. Please show up if you can & come together to help spread positivity for Mike.

The NERC community & Mike's friends are in the process of developing other creative ways to raise fund which will be announce as soon as they fully develop.

Thank you for your generosity & for being strong for Mike during his recovery.

Yesterday morning Mike called me with the idea of stopping by our Tuesday NERC run (he co-leads) to cheer people on at the turn around point. After going back and forth with "you know there's no pressure to be there" and the important "get some rest" orders, he surprised us all and showed up anyways. He wanted to individually thank everyone for being there for him and the way people reacted when they saw him was priceless. Mike is fearless, strong, & the perfect example of leadership for not only our running community, but for every aspect of his life. Though his recovery is going great, the next step is meeting with a cardiologist this week for the first time. Between every single generous donation on here, in person, or through local businesses, it's safe to say we reached our goal of $30,000 in just 8 days. Thank you for being there for Mike and we're all looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for him. Have a great day! Spread love.

Just seen today from Cindy Graf via Facebook Sunday, March 18th:
“I definitely need to give a shout out today to my girls! Emily and Bri. They were so awesome photographing the races. But I also have to tell everyone about one of the greatest moment I got to witness . At the finish line one of the runners hearts stopped he collapsed right onto Emily. No pulse and Emily didn’t hesitate. She immediately gave him CPR all the while I didn’t really see what was happening till I saw her beanie with the pompom bobbing up and down while she was giving him chest compression shouting at people surrounding him and giving instructions. It’s just an incredible thing to see someone you love save a life. I know she’s embarrassed to hear us keep saying this but “you saved a life today Emily and we’re so proud of you❤️”

Sorry for the delay but I do have an UPDATE as of Thursday evening, March 22nd! I went to visit Mike today for the first time since Sunday morning (as respect to his family's wishes for no visitors) & will say considering what he's been through, he's well on the road to recovery! He was moved from the ICU to the CCU which is great news! Though I wasn't able to talk to a nurse, I do know they're waiting to run some more test on his heart in the days to come I hope to be updated with.

I do want to share one amazing story I learned today from his brother, Tim. Once Mike crossed the finish line Sunday morning, he didn't collapse or fall as we imagined. He instead took a seat against the railing next to an off duty ICU nurse (I believe who was from out of town) & expressed how he felt like he was about to pass out. She responded back to the extend of "no, don't do that" just before his event occurred. She immediately responded to him & within those first 30 seconds had the first responders (who was told today he met with yesterday) administer the CPR. The odds of that happening on are beyond me & are in the hands of something greater than any of us. We all shared a big smile hearing that.

People have generously dropped off food to the hospital for him so he has "Stockpot for days" as he said, which if you know Mike than you know his love for Stockpot. He mentioned yesterday was a little exhausting with so many visitors stop in throughout day so I think until further notice, anyone thinking about visiting should hold off a few more days until he gains more strength back. He loves his phone though so we've already seen him give a "like" & post messages giving thanks. Most of all, Mike is back with us. This couldn't happen without the amazing medical team he's been surround by since Sunday morning & the positivity & prayer our community has given him. More updates to come!
