Micky's NFTS Fund

My name is Micky and I’m an animator. I’m currently working through my first year on a postgraduate Master's course at the highly prestigious National Film and Television School; Directing Animation. In order to continue this incredible yet terrifying step at this stage of my life, I’m asking for your support.

I have left my employment and have thrown myself into this amazing opportunity that I’ve been offered. The course lasts for two years with fees of £13,800 per year. And, although I have saved as much as I can, my resources cannot cover everything. I'm unfortunately unable to earn any regular income as I have throughout my past education, due to the intensity of the course. My goal is £10,000.

Since I was 16 years old, I’ve always worked hard both in my education and in my working life. I’ve strived to save money for many years in order to have the ability to invest in my future. To achieve this, I have sacrificed much of my time and freedom; I’ve worked throughout my university education which meant no free weekends, very few holidays and I’ve always been extremely sensible with my expenses. I worked as a freelancer when I left university and soon went into my first salaried job. I come from a family with a working class background and from a miner’s town, Mansfield. I’m only the second person in the family to gain a university degree and I’m the first to go into postgraduate education.

I’m inspired by strong people; conversations with different minds and viewpoints. Feminism always sparks a passionate discussion and I enjoy challenging people’s perceptions.

I want to inspire others in this way; I want to make people consider things that I care about. And I wish to engage and entertain people in the same way that I always have been, through the amazing craft that is animation. Animation not only lends itself to storytelling but is the perfect medium for conveying an important message. Its accessibility allows it to reach wide audiences and I believe it has so much further potential. And I would really like to explore that potential as I grow.

As an animator I’ve won various awards for my work. As a student I won the Regional Royal Television Society Award for my film at university. Through working at a creative content agency, my animations have won multiple Drum Roses Creative Awards as well as nominations at the RAR Digital Awards and the Drum DADI Awards. I’ve also created animated work that has been entered into various national festivals.

And now, my most surreal achievement is being accepted onto this course. I am attending the very same school where the creators of Wallace and Gromit and Peppa Pig were educated.

Financial security would allow me to focus entirely on my work – and ultimately my future - without having to worry about costs. I want to give this course my absolute all and so I would greatly appreciate any support that can be offered to help the future of animation.
