As some of you know- our Mama, Michelle, has been struggling with serious lung problems for 20 years.
She’s been in and out of the hospital countless times fighting with everything she has to recover each time.
A few years ago, she was diagnosed with an immunodeficiency disease (Nonfamilial Hypogammaglobulinemia), which has allowed her to make some progress toward being healthy, but she has still struggled with her lungs shutting down and overreacting. The only way the doctors have found to treat this is through steroids. While the steroids have saved her life the past few years, they have caused so many other problems- including blood sugar and weight issues that she can’t control. Last year, she spent over 6 months on high dose steroids and this year she’s already been hospitalized and on them for 4 months.
Recently, when she was finally released from the hospital, her doctors told her there was no more they could do for her, so in order to find an alternative, they are sending her to National Jewish Health in Denver. While we now have some hope that we can get some answers and make some progress, her insurance only covers the actual visits with the doctors. All other costs, such as transportation, housing, food, gas, and medications (including oxygen rental for a portable oxygen tank to take out there which is up to $2400) - need to be covered by us. These costs add up, and are pretty daunting.
It is not easy for us to ask for help, and we wish we could handle this on our own, but 10 days in Denver, travel costs, and medicine add up, and we want Mama to be able to focus on the tests and getting some answers. The trip is scheduled for July 15th until July 25th. We are grateful for all the love and support we have gotten so far, and we appreciate any help we can get for Denver.
