On February 15th, Michelle was admitted to SkyRidge Medical Center with chest pain and shortness of breath. The following day, Michelle was diagnosed with a dissected coronary artery and the treatment at the time was a balloon angioplasty. After a short recovery, Michelle was released the next day.
On the evening of February 18th, Michelle had complained of chest pain again and shortly after went into full cardiac arrest. Michelle's husband, Brian called the EMTs and immediately started CPR with help from his father. Upon arrival, the EMTs continued to performed CPR. Michelle was then transported to The Medical Center of Aurora's ER.
Once at the hospital, the doctors discovered that the same area which the balloon angioplasty had been performed had clotted and caused a major heart attack. Michelle was immediately taken into surgery and put into a medically induced coma. The surgeons placed four stents inside Michelle's right coronary artery.
Due to the amount of time Michelle was unconscious, her brain was starved of oxygen for up to 10 minutes. The doctors intentionally cooled her body to 96.8' to help reduce any further brain damage, however we will not know the extent of damage until the doctors and nurses run more neurological test once Michelle is awake.
Ultimately the doctors believe the cause was a spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD). It is a relatively uncommon, however it accounts for 40% of heart attacks among young women under the age of 50. "Patients are often women who are otherwise healthy, with few or no risks factors of heart disease. Some studies have pointed to a hormonal link, showing a greater incidence among post-partum women." Michelle (34 years young) and her husband are loving parents of a blended family of seven children (13yr, 12yr, 9yr, 8yr, 4yr, 2yr, 5mo). At the time of her heart attack, Michelle was a stay at home mother while Brian had recently transferred into a new job and was not yet eligible for benefits at the time. We are hoping to help ease the burden of the mounting medical bills that will come with extended ICU stays, ongoing treatments, and medications. Ultimately, Michelle faces a long road to recovery and we are extremely appreciative of any and all assistance . Every little bit helps!
