In less than 30 hours, Micah Nicole Hubeli, 32,   was in critical condition.  She had visited a local ER twice in less than 10 days.   On her second visit, Monday, January 30th, she was given antibiotics and prednisone for cellulitis.   The next day was the third time, her mother, Cathy,  took her to an ER due to vomiting, disorientation, swelling and discoloration of her left arm and hand as well as blisters on her left hand and arm.  This one was within the Gulf Breeze Baptisit Hospital approximately 36 miles from Micah's home.
Her ER physician, Dr. Riley, determined that her kidneys, liver, and heart were not functioning properly.  In addition, her white blood cell count was elevated and her blood platelets were low which made her blood pressure fluctuate.  He and his team determined Micah's state as critical; he gave her four possible outcomes:  lose her entire left arm at the shoulder, lose her left forearm at the elbow, lose her left hand, or death.  Dr. Riley contacted  Life Flight to transport Micah quickly to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fl, where an orthopedic surgeon , Dr. Jon Paul Szatkowski, was waiting to begin  emergency surgery.  Approximately five hours later, Dr. Szatkowski informed Cathy that he had to remove all of the skin on Micah's  left arm to begin treating necrotic tissue and to try to prevent the bacteria from spreading,   He further stated that his team was "bombarding" her  both interveonously and topically with every antibiotic known to see if the necrosis would stop spreading.  At that point, there were no amputations.  "She is still not out of the woods" he stated and "I will continue to operate again in 12 hours and daily until we know for sure that the bacteria is no longer present".  During her third surgery, Dr. Swatkowski had to remove her left hand to ensure that the bacteria which had now been identified (by an infectious disease specialist)  as four staph bacterias would not keep spreading and attacking her good tissue.
Micah's strength and your prayers enabled her to be released from the hospital on March 1st.  After 2  1/2  weeks in the SINU (Surgical Intensive Nursing Unit) in a medically induced paralysis,  after eleven  surgeries including amputation of her left hand and skin grafts, and 1 1/2 weeks in surgical intensive care, she is in great spirits spending time with her family  and her dog.  This has been a very difficult time for Micah and her family emotionally, mentally, and physically.   Micah still has many hurdles to overcome, but with your help, she will conquer some of the monetary ones.   Again, Micah and her family would like to say thank you for your prayers and support during this time. Any  donations received are greatly appreciated and every amount will help Micah pay her medical expenses  which includes the purchasing of her prosthetic hand.
