Hi, my name is Stefanie Shookman.  My sister Sara Melgar is 34 years old with three children ages 3, 5, and 7.  She recently started having headaches and small seizures which prompted her to go into the doctor.  After doing an EEG and MRI she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  The location is in her left frontal lobe about 6 cm around.  Since the tumor is so large it is pressing on a lot of important things, mainly her hypothalamus.  They will be performing surgery on Monday, Novemeber 23 in Milwaukee.  They have already told us that they are unable to take out all of the tumor and she will need at least one other surgery after this one.  She will need radiation to shrink what is left after the first surgery and possibly chemo depending on what the pathology report comes back as.  These surgeries will take her away from work for at least half of the year doctors are saying and her husband will have to take care of the kids.  I have started this site to try and raise money for them and to help out with their three kids.  Anything you are able to give would be very much appreciated.  Please keep Sara is your prayers.  Thank you!

Update on Sara,
She finally got the results back from the brain study that was done. (This is what I had the benefit for last June.) Unfortunately all of the markers they were hoping to find did not show up. They found zero matches for the studies they are doing right now. Basically leaving us where we were before the test was done. So at this point Sara will be doing 4 more months of chemo if her system can handle it, her labs are at the lowest they have been. This puts her finishing treatments in March. There is no plan after March, it will just be to see what happens... Sara continues her diet of no sugar, where the doctors have told us that the cancer is gone, but she still has the tumor that hasn't gotten any smaller. Thank you again to everyone for your prayers and all of the offers for Christmas gifts and items for the kids, we are all grateful for you, your love and generosity! ❤️

Alright, we are finally home! So the MRI today came back with no changes and no growths which is great news! The bad news is she now has shingles in her eye. We went to see an ophthalmologist after the MRI to confirm diagnosis and it has already made it on her cornea which is the bad news because once it gets there it doesn't really leave.. So for now they have added another pill to her 47 daily pills, what's another one at this point right... Her blood counts have been down lately making her more susceptible to viruses and infection so this is most likely the cause of this coming out. Thank you all for your prayers, we are just thankful it wasn't the tumor growing like they had thought.

Hey everyone, just an update about Sara. She has been having really bad headaches the last 3-4 days that have been getting worse keeping her from doing her normal exercise and daily routines. She finally went in and they told her that her only option would be to have another MRI with contrast done to see what was going on. They weren't able to give her anything for the throbbing pain because they don't want anything to interfere with the scan that will be taking place tomorrow. They sent her home with medications to start taking tonight pending her scan at 9:00 am. The doctor lead on that this probably isn't going to be a good thing so we are all nervous about the results tomorrow. Please keep Sara and her family in your prayers tonight. They should get the results back shortly after the scan is done so I will post the results after we know. Thanks for your continued love and support!

As a cancer survivor, she may want to keep a little something in her stomach at all times, little meals are better than big ones, and if I'd have listened to my prognosis I would have been dead over 11 yrs ago...still here... Find something positive every day. I believe you will be here to see grandkids.
