Who are we?
METAS is committed toward engaging individuals who are blind through innovative structure-discovery skill-based, culturally-sensitive, hands-on trainings, and emphasizing valuable mentor-centered programs, opportunities, and informative resources.
The Need:
Of the 285 million visually impaired in the world, an estimated 4/5th are unemployed, only 2 percent of the visually impaired receive consistent education. METAS International currently offers programs to redefine disability and positively enrich the outlook to blindness and improve upon the vocational worth of the blind in their own communities.
Vision:
Our vision is to empower the blind worldwide with innovative skill-based, mentor-centered, positive programing that empowers self-actualization.
Why METAS?
METAS puts an emphasis on the mentoring process, not the miss-understanding to disability that exists. We value team-work, and hands-on interaction with each student. Our target audience is blind individuals who consider themselves vocationally dissatisfied. METAS programs and curriculum are created by blind persons themselves, and can be uniquely individualized to meet the needs of any student.
The METAS Initiative & Program:
Our Youth Program is a comprehensive one-week, mentor-facilitated training, which teaches classes in self-determination to difference and disability, Braille literacy, orientation and mobility, independent living skills, accessible technology, and Adaptive Sports and Recreation for students of elementary age.
In our Awareness Initiative we host engaging informative seminars, and provide valuable consultation and resources and opportunities for companies, government agencies, educational institutions, families, and related stakeholders in blindness to open their minds to the empowerment movement toward disability, accessibility, and inclusion.
Our Accomplishments:
In our inaugural empowerment-project we provided 35-students White Canes, and successfully implemented our Elementary Program at a school for the blind in Guadalajara Mexico. In addition to our activities with blind children we offered specialized consulting services toward improving the tactile information and accessibility to the city train and bus facilities. The regional government and rehabilitation agency were also excited to incorporate our methods with blind adults in future projects.
We also developed a relationship in Nicaragua to provide accessible aids and appliances for blind individuals in-need. We currently have positive relationships in other regions in Mexico, Bolivia, Cuba, and Ghana. In not even one-year of existence and limited finances METAS has touched the lives of approximately 50 vocationally dissatisfied blind people internationally.
