The first men’s Roller Derby Team Italy is coming.

A tiny, huge, project.
Born to the passion, the sharing and the love for challenges.

From some time, the guys of Italian Roller Derby were getting ready, maybe without even knowing it. Someone wearing a referee shirt, or a coach band. Being a fan, volunteer, driver, sponsor, masseur, motivator, translator, photographer, DJ, bartender, cook or nurse.. Without ever wanting one single thing back, they crucially contributed to the development of women’s Italian Roller Derby:  the unbelievable adventure of the Dallas World Cup, the first bouts in the Italian territory, bootcamps and European tournaments in Italy.

Many of them, day after day, grew the curiosity and the desire to physically cross that line, the boundary that kept them off the track, to live in first person the sport they love.  Whenever and wherever possible, trying not to disturb too much, they started to train very hard. Alone, at first; a few together then. Now, they are enough to be called a Team.

Well.

The occasion doesn’t knock on doors all the times. Men’s Roller Derby World Cup, is going to take place in Calgary (Alberta, Canada) 21-24 July 2016. After the success of the previous edition two years ago, 22 nations coming from 6 continents are going to battle on the track in four days full of competitive bouts, to be the only one to be crowned champion (http://mrdwc.com/).

After some lucky coincidences, raising a general surprise, Italy has been invited to participate, and the guys did not think it twice and accepted the challenge.

A global event needs a global approach: Italians from all over the world, possessing the requirements to be part of Team Italy, have been invited to take part to the selection process. The call spread out in Europe as well as overseas. Applications came from Switzerland, Great Britain, Belgium and from United States East Coast. They came mainly from more expert athletes, maybe active from a longer time in their own leagues, or even protagonists in the men’s Roller Derby of their region.  But all of them equally enthusiast to live an experience as unique as this one. Humbly, as it happens in the big international Roller Derby community. But also with proud and respect in representing that country, Italy, that their grandparents or parents had to leave decades ago, to go after better chances.

Under the guide of Elo-C-Raptor, Head Coach chosen by the athletes themselves, tryouts have begun:  going abroad or moving through Italy, intensive trainings, games with other national teams, organizational and strategic meetings, media events. The machine is running, and it’s going really fast. At the end of this process, 20 athletes will wear the Italian colors and will get on the plane that will take them to Canada. In 4 crazy days they will gather the work of the last 9 months. Anyway, history will be made.

In our wheely world there is not that much money. Sponsors, few but good, give a fundamental contribute to maintain and develop Italian and international Roller Derby. But flights, hostels, gym rentals, insurance, promotional and technical equipment represent an excessive expense looking at the wallets of most athletes. Roller Derby is self-funded, we got used to that, but in this case breaking the piggy bank won’t be enough. Most of the guys will be broke before even flying to Canada; others already gave it up for this reason. But all of them are absolutely convinced of the huge value of this dream, that goes way beyond money.

For this reason, any donation of yours, even if apparently insignificant, will be precious. Vital. Every contribute will be a little help that will accompany Italy and the Italians from all over the world to this World Cup experience. Meaning another minute of gym rental for trainings, another mile to travel, another jam to play. Everything will be important, everything will be essential to make this dream come true.

At the end of the tournament, wherever it will go, the cup will have your name on it anyway. And, more importantly, your trust will not be wasted, but invested in a project born victorious. You’ll find it in every drop they will sweat, in every point they will score, in every smile of satisfaction and in every painful expression. In every team hug for a goal that, with your support, will be reached anyway: being there.

E’ in arrivo la prima Nazionale Italiana di roller derby maschile .

Un piccolo, grande, progetto. Che nasce dalla passione, dalla condivisione, dall’amore per le sfide.

Da diverso tempo, i ragazzi del roller derby italiano si stavano preparando, forse senza neanche rendersene conto. Chi con addosso una maglia da arbitro, chi con la fascia da allenatore. Chi da fan, volontario, autista, finanziatore, massaggiatore, motivatore, traduttore, fotografo, DJ, barista, cuoco o infermiere… Senza volere niente in cambio, hanno contribuito in maniera determinante allo sviluppo del derby femminile italiano: l’incredibile avventura della World Cup di Dallas, le prime partite delle proprie leghe, i bootcamp e i tornei europei in Italia.

Molti di loro, giorno dopo giorno, hanno maturato la curiosità e il desiderio di passare fisicamente quella linea, il confine che li separava dal track, per vivere sulla propria pelle lo sport che amano. Nei ritagli di tempo e di spazio, cercando di non disturbare troppo, hanno iniziato ad allenarsi duramente. Da soli, prima; in pochi, poi. Ora, sono finalmente in numero sufficiente per definirsi una squadra.

Se ancora non li conoscete, è ora di appassionarsi alla loro storia.

L’occasione per farlo non capita tutti i giorni.
La ‘Men’s Roller Derby World Cup’, la Coppa del Mondo maschile, si svolgerà a Calgary (Alberta, Canada) dal 21 al 24 Luglio 2016. Dopo il successo dell’edizione di due anni fa, 22 nazionali provenienti dai 6 continenti torneranno ad affrontarsi sul track in quattro giorni di partite molto competitive, per aggiudicarsi il titolo mondiale (http://mrdwc.com/).

Per una serie di fortunate circostanze, nella sorpresa generale, l’Italia è stata invitata a partecipare. E i ragazzi, ancora increduli, hanno accettato la sfida senza pensarci due volte.

Ecco che il movimento maschile italiano ha ricevuto un’improvvisa accelerazione.

Ecco prendere forma la prima Nazionale Italiana maschile.

Un evento globale necessita di un approccio globale: italiani di fatto o di origine, tutti gli atleti al mondo in possesso dei requisiti per entrare nel ‘Team Italy’ sono stati invitati a prendere parte alle selezioni. L’appello si è diffuso nella vicina Europa, così come oltreoceano. Sono arrivate richieste dalla Svizzera, dal Regno Unito, dal Belgio, dalla costa orientale degli Stati Uniti. Si tratta spesso di atleti più esperti, magari attivi da più tempo nelle loro leghe, o addirittura protagonisti del movimento maschile nella propria regione. Ma tutti ugualmente entusiasti di poter vivere un’esperienza unica. Con umiltà e spirito di servizio, come avviene nella grande comunità del roller derby internazionale. Ma anche con orgoglio e grande rispetto nel rappresentare quel paese, l’Italia, che i loro nonni o i loro genitori anni fa lasciarono a malincuore per inseguire un’occasione migliore.

Sotto la guida di Elo-C-Raptor, Head Coach nominata dagli stessi atleti, sono iniziate le selezioni in vista del torneo: trasferte in Italia e all’estero, allenamenti intensivi, partite con altre nazionali europee, riunioni organizzative e strategiche, eventi mediatici. La macchina si è messa in moto, e sta andando più veloce del previsto. Alla fine di questo processo, 20 atleti indosseranno la maglia tricolore e saliranno su un aereo che li porterà in Canada. In soli quattro, frenetici, giorni condenseranno il lavoro degli ultimi nove mesi. E, comunque andrà, sarà fatta la storia.

Nel nostro mondo a rotelle non girano molti soldi. Gli sponsor, pochi ma buoni, danno un contributo fondamentale al mantenimento e allo sviluppo del roller derby italiano ed internazionale. Siamo fortunati ad averli. Ma i voli, gli ostelli, gli affitti delle palestre, le assicurazioni, il materiale tecnico e promozionale rappresentano spese eccessive rispetto alle possibilità di quasi tutti gli atleti. Il roller derby è autofinanziamento, ci siamo abituati, ma in questo caso rompere il salvadanaio non basterà. Molti ragazzi esauriranno i propri risparmi prima ancora di volare in Canada; altri hanno già rinunciato per lo stesso motivo. Ma tutti sono assolutamente convinti del grande valore di questo sogno, che va ben oltre il suo rendimento economico.

Per questo, qualsiasi vostra donazione, anche se apparentemente insignificante, sarà preziosa. Anzi, vitale. Ogni contributo si tradurrà in un piccolo, concreto, aiuto che accompagnerà l’Italia e gli italiani di tutto il mondo all’esperienza mondiale: che sia un altro minuto di affitto per gli allenamenti, un altro miglio di viaggio, un altro jam da giocare. Tutto sarà importante, tutto sarà fondamentale per realizzare quanto promesso.

Al termine del torneo, dovunque andrà, la coppa porterà di certo anche il vostro nome. E, ciò che è più importante, la vostra fiducia non sarà sprecata, ma piuttosto investita in un progetto che nasce vincente. La ritroverete in ogni goccia di sudore versata, in ogni punto segnato, in ogni sorriso di soddisfazione e in ogni smorfia di dolore. In ogni abbraccio di squadra per un obiettivo che, con il vostro supporto, sarà comunque raggiunto: esserci.
