Help My Mom Beat Stage 4 Cancer

Donation protected
If ever there were a person that could light up any room they walked into, that person would be, my mom, Melanie Sunshine Speregen. If ever there was a person in need, because their world is crumbling around them, my mom would be the person they would call. This is now the time my family needs prayers, support, and love from all those they have touched.

I want to share how life suddenly changed this week, for my family, when we found out my mom is in a battle for her life facing a deadly cancer. We have faith my mom will survive this, but we need help from people like you.

While visiting my parents over Father’s Day weekend from my home in the Bay Area, I noticed my Mom’s color was off. After our visit, my Dad took her to the doctor where she was labeled jaundice, and the doctor’s noticed a growth on her pancreas. After several tests, she was admitted to the hospital and received a biliary drainage tube. Shortly thereafter, she was sent home from the hospital. She was only home 2 days when she was rushed back to the hospital in severe dehydration resulting in kidney failure.  My dad was told had he not gotten her to the hospital as quickly as he did, her fight would have been over before it truly began. This time she stayed for 7 days where she underwent a second biopsy clearly showing tumors in both her pancreas and liver. This is when our worst fears were realized - PANCREATIC CANCER STAGE 4.

My Dad has been by her side through thick and thin for 36 years and he is her rock. As much as I want and need to be with my Mom and Dad at this time, my obligations as a wife and a first grade teacher in the Bay Area, keep me from being with them as much as I would like. This leaves my Dad to juggle both his business obligations and to tend to her needs.

Unfortunately, due to a car accident in 2015, which resulted in several surgeries for my Dad, his business suffered. My Mom has struggled to pay the bills and keep them going. They have depleted their savings. Paying for rent and medical bills weighs heavy on both their shoulders. Her doctors would like to start an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy yet she is too weak to start right away. To alleviate additional stress, we need help from people like you.

My Mom has a way with people and they flock to her like bees to honey. She goes out of her way to help others when they need it most.  She has been involved with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, City of Hope, and LAFRA. My parents are always giving even when they do not have anything to give. Now, we are asking for support.

My goal is to raise $75k which would help cover most of her medical expenses, alternative therapies and supplements, managing the household, and assist with ongoing grocery bills. If you are able to help out I would really appreciate it and if you know anyone else who may be interested in helping please feel free to share. Every little bit counts and my hope is to pay it forward after we get her past this by spreading awareness and all the knowledge we have gained along this journey to others who either have or are affected by cancer.

My entire family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts!

My best,
