My brothers story starts only 4 months ago, on Saturday the 22nd of September 2018.

My brother, Larry Dichiera, was shockingly diagnosed with Cancer Unknown Primary in the abdominal area.

Larry is my 37yr old younger brother, older brother to my 2 younger sisters Teresa and Lidia, and only son to my parents Pasquale and Maria Dichiera.  He is the Uncle/Compare La to our nieces Eva and Lilliana, brother-in-law to Colin Ward and Arnie Singh, and the future husband to his beautiful fiancé Felicity.

Larry has always been a happy, healthy, fit and strong person, Courageous and hardworking, and a generous and loyal mate.  He comes from a big, loud, highly opinionated and feisty Italian family, however, at the end of the day family is everything to us, and will ALWAYS come first.

Prior to Larry’s diagnosis of Cancer Unknown Primary (CUP).  We as a family, had no idea that such a thing even existed.  I mean sure, everyone knows what cancer is, but this particular diagnosis kinda threw us.

Cancer Unknown Primary (CUP), is the term used to describe a metastatic cancer that has spread – with an Unknown starting point.

Usually, when cancer spreads, the secondary cancer cells look like abnormal versions of the primary cancer cells (in the tissue where the cancer began), however; this isn’t so for Larry’s condition.

Cancer Unknown Primary (CUP) is an extremely rare cancer, there is NO CURE, only 2500 people in Australia are diagnosed each year with this particular cancer, and there is still not enough research out there on how to treat it, or how and why it happens.

CUP is the 14th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, and is the 6th leading cause of cancer deaths in Australia.

Studies and trials are still being conducted by the researchers at Peter Mac and all over the world, however this all takes a lot of time and a lot of money; so unfortunately, we still do not have any answers for Larry.

So much has happened to my brother Larry in this short period of time, and we cannot believe how incredibly aggressive this cancer has been towards him. Larry has gone from being this perfectly healthy and muscly guy, to this meek and frail shadow of his former self, and it has completely shaken us all to the core.  Within a matter of 8 weeks, Larry had dropped from a healthy 85kg to a now shocking 64kg.

Within 4 weeks of being diagnosed, Larry was admitted into Peter Mac hospital with life threatening Liver problems, where his eyes and skin were so horribly yellow, that all we could do was turn to our faith in GOD and pray our hearts out.  Following this turn of events, Larry then needed 2 surgical procedures done to check for further tumor growth, the insertion of stents into his liver - to assist with its functionality and alleviating the blockages that were found, and finally he had to have 2 drainage bags attached to the outside of his stomach – to ensure the excess toxic, fluid build-up was exiting his body.

This horrifying and ‘yoyoing’ process lasted 3 and half weeks, until Larry was finally strong enough to be discharged and sent home – but that wasn’t the end.

One week after being discharged, Larry was then in and out of hospital every week with different CUP related problems – severe abdominal pain & bloating, constipation, high temperatures and finally a large, tumorous, bowel obstruction in his large intestine that required immediate and serious Colostomy surgery.

Larry now has a Stoma bag attached to the outside of his stomach forever; and after 3 months of Chemotherapy we have just recently found out that it is not working, and the cancer is still active and metastasising.

Larry has been to hell and back in this short period, and although he feels completely exhausted and worn out, he still hasn’t given up yet and neither have we.  As Larry’s family we will continue to be the STRONG network of support for him and his fiancé Felicity, for as long as it takes - after all, isn’t that what family is for?

We will endeavor to exhaust every avenue possible, to find a cure for Larry and to give him a better and longer quality of life.

There are so many different types of Integrative treatments out there,Immune therapies etc, that work as great adjuncts to chemotherapy, and if there’s something out there to help improve my brother’s condition – we WILL find it.  Unfortunately, this all requires an endless supply of money, which is why we have put together this Go Fund me page for Larry.

My family and I would like to humbly ask you for your help and support, in continuing to find the BEST possible therapies and treatments for Larry.  Please share this story with everyone you know, and together we can help to spread the awareness of Cancer Unknown Primary and finally find a cure for this debilitating disease.
To our family and friends, and to all of you out there whom we don’t even know; please help us to save Larry’s life.

Any and all donations will be accepted and Greatly appreciated – from $2 to $20; and from my family to yours, Thank you in advance.
