Our Nephew Andrew Renyck is 15 years old. He was recently diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia (your body stops producing enough new blood cells and leaves you feeling exhausted and at a higher risk of infections and uncontrolled bleeding) AND also diagnosed with PNH (Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria- a rare blood disease). Our Family has hope of a cure with Andrew being treated at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as they have had 14 successful transplants last year for the same things Andrew has been diagnosed with!
Philadelphia is around 9 hours (round trip) from their home in Hollidaysburg, Pa. Making a “day trip” is nearly impossible along with the time they need to spend once they get to the hospital in Philadelphia. After all of the initial testing/diagnosis/treatment plan traveling back and forth is done, they will have to continue to travel from Hollidaysburg to Philadelphia for 5 straight weeks and then bi-weekly for specific PNH medication that needs to be given to him at the hospital. After his bi-weekly medication visits are over he will be admitted as an inpatient to begin chemotherapy for 1 week and then radiation for 1-2 days to wipe out his entire immune system and then have a Bone Marrow Transplant. The Bone Marrow Transplant will require him to have a 5 week hospital in patient stay. Once he is released, he and a Parent are required to remain living within 1 hour of Philadelphia for at least 2 months. I can’t even imagine having to live away from my home, family and friends which is what they will be required to do during this time.
As you can imagine, this is a scary and exhausting time for Andrew and for his Parents who have full time jobs and of course the tasks of running a household along with the amount of travel time and the expenses that come with all of it (gas, food, hotels, parking fees etc). Not to mention the bills that will be incurred from the medications and procedures even after insurance pays a portion.
This is going to be a long road for Andrew and his Family and has been and will continue to be taxing emotionally, physically and financially which is why we are asking today for your help.
