Medical student's dream

My name is Soraya Djadjo. I am a 3rd year medical student at SABA University School of Medicine in Dutch, Caribbean. I love to help and hate the fact that, in some 3rd world countries, people die of diseases polio, malaria or cholera, diseases that have not made the spotlights in so long. I wanted to make a difference by acquiring the necessary knowledge that would help me provide, at least primary care in those areas. No matter how much my parents would have loved for me to become a physician, they could not afford the expenses that came with it. I have only made it this far in my medical career because of financial aid. Despite many obstacles, I have put in the hard work, taking the necessary steps, putting in the time and effort to be what I have always dreamed of. My journey there was a struggle from the start but I kept pushing, day after day. Recently, I found out that I no longer meet the school’s satisfactory academic progress guidelines. Because of my struggle, it took me longer than usual to complete my first two years of medical school. As result, I no longer, am able to receive federal loans.

Currently, tuition is about $19000.00 per semester and about $6000 for books, rent, and living expenses. I still have 5 semesters ahead of me ($100000). It is a lot of money but I know I can get it, with your support.

When I lost my funding, I was very disappointed and felt like giving up. When, I think of the need of primary care physicians, I feel like this call to be a physician is not only about me, but about the need of my community. Someone once told me “if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life”. I love to help, I love medicine.

I am currently working two jobs trying to save enough to start back as soon as possible. It will take me years to raise what I need even with two jobs but I do not let that bring me down. I work and save as much as I can. Requesting funding from most institutions/churches have been very discouraging, as they fund to charities/groups and not individuals. However, I keep searching for any form of help I can get via grants, and the creation and sharing of this “go fund me” page, and I trust that my goal will be met on time for me to finish school. Without your support, my call to be a physician will take much longer.

The first two years of medical school were tough, many of my colleagues changed path along the way. I, by God’s grace made it via what is known to be the hardest part of medicine, basic science. Now that I am even closer to accomplishing my goal I will not let lack of funding stop me. Proper funding, will not only help me fund the completion of my medical school path but will put one more physician in the community, especially in the areas all around us where primary care is lacking. A lack that is taking lives of thousands, and mostly children whom, if given the opportunity to grow could have also been future physicians.

I am about 72 weeks from being the person that I saw myself when I first got the acceptance letter from SABA University School of medicine on November 2013, a thought that seemed achievable when I first set foot on the campus in May 2014. Without financial aid, all these efforts of mine will go down the drain.  I am pleading for help, any amount will surely go a long way

Thank you for taking your time to read my story and for your financial support.  I am truly grateful. I would also appreciate your support by sharing my story with people you know, to help my dream come true.
