Shohdy Naguib Surur, the Egyptian-Russian web developer, journalist and poet, is battling an aggressive form of lung cancer, which has him in excruciating pain as he fights for his life. He is currently in a hospital in Goa, India, where he awaits funds to settle his hospital bill.
Shohdy left Egypt in 2002 after he was prosecuted for publishing on his website the controversial 1969 Nasser-era political poem 'El-Ummiyat', written by his late father, the Egyptian poet Naguib Surur. He was briefly arrested and charged with possessing ‘immoral booklets' and left Egypt to Russia during his appeal. He was sentenced to one year in prison.
Shohdy has since moved to Goa, India, seeking a simple and quiet life, surviving on the bare minimum.
After a misdiagnosis and excruciating chest pains, Shohdy checked in hospital early June after doctors told him he is suffering from an aggressive form of lung cancer. He doesn’t have health insurance or the financial means to being to cover his bills. He can only breathe with the aid of an oxygen mask -- and can’t always breathe unless he’s in a seated position, which prevents him from sleeping.
Shohdy can’t surive a commercial flight to Delhi or anywhere which is why an ambulance flight is necessary.
Please help Shohdy get the best medical care in India by getting him to specialist care in New Delhi.
He deserves to breathe, live and love for what remains of his life.
