Medical and rehabilitation costs for Kim Gosney

Donation protected

On 5/7/19, Kim was in a head-on collision on her way to work. In the accident, Kim sustained a shattered tibia plateau (the top of the calf bone that makes up the knee), a torn right rotator cuff (Kim is right-handed), a laceration to her head that required stitches and staples, and a detached retina in her left eye.  Kim was hospitalized and underwent surgery to rebuild her tibia plateau.  She has since been released to a rehabilitation/skilled nursing facility. She is unable to put any weight on her broken leg for approximately 12 weeks. Although the Drs believe the detached retina will heal without surgery, she will need surgery to repair her torn rotator cuff which will require additional rehabilitation and physical and occupational therapies. That surgery will happen in July. What all of this means is that Kim will be unable to work for a minimum of four months.

We are incredibly lucky that Kim is alive. The investigating officer said that the only reason there wasn't a fatality in this accident was that the cars were small, and approximately the same weight. Kim's car is a complete loss. The impact of the accident was so strong that it broke her laptop computer and an external phone charger in multiple pieces. Although the other driver was determined to be 100% at fault, we have not yet been able to confirm that they are insured.

Kim has a great team of friends and family who are doing our best to organize treatment and recovery, but now we need to address the financial losses she is incurring. Kim will be applying for state disability, but at it's best, it will only cover 60% of her lost wages. She thankfully has health insurance, but she has a high deductible ($2500) and a "Maximum Out Of Pocket" expense of $7500, which she has already reached. Her middle-of-the-road policy will not cover the hospital bed rental, wheelchair, walker, commode, or any other medical equipment that she will need during her recovery.  It also does not cover transportation to any follow-up appointments, which currently and for the foreseeable future must be done by medical transport as she cannot be transferred out of the wheelchair and into a car.

Besides the large expenses, there are a number of smaller expenses piling up as well. During her hospital stay, and continuing on during her stay in rehab/skilled nursing facility, we have had to employ a pet sitter to care for Kim's beloved companion kitties, Maui & Zulu. Additionally, we have had to order new clothes for Kim that are appropriate for wearing during physical and occupational therapies, that are stretchy enough to go over the large knee bandage and brace, and that don't require her to lift her right arm.

If you know Kim, you know she is usually the first person to set up and donate to a GoFundMe for someone else, even on her small non-profit salary. She has a beautiful, generous, loving spirit and right now she needs us more than ever. We are setting the initial goal at $15,000 as that is the bare minimum of what she will need to cover the out of pocket expenses, not including lost wages. If we can raise more than that, that would be an incredible blessing!
