Me to We Trip: Kenya 2019

What would it be like to have to walk about a kilometer or more every day just to get water for our basic needs and then have to carry the heavy containers of water all the way back? And what would it be like to only have access to dirty water? Luckily, we don’t deal with this problem in most of Canada, but there clearly are many other communities, and even entire countries, around the world that do.

In areas of rural Kenya, it can be difficult to get access to water. Having to walk a kilometer or more just to get to a river, where the water is dirty, is very unfortunate. If we think about everything we use water for, such as showers, drinking, cooking, or cleaning, you could imagine how much water a person would need to get every day to support a family. Also, education is a problem in parts of  Kenya. Some areas have never seen a school while others have schools but they’re old and in bad shape. Having an education is one of the most important things in life because it gives people a chance to accomplish things when they’re adults. Education allows people to learn more about the world around them and to follow their passion. Therefore, having more new schools can allow more people to have a chance at being successful in following their dreams.

During the March Break of 2019, selected students are going to a village in Kenya for eleven days on a Me to We trip. Every year, students go on a Me to We trip to a country to help the locals and to make a change. Whether that means building schools or digging wells, the students leave a lasting impact every year.

I, Nick Bremner, am a student of Digby Regional High School and I've been lucky enough to have been chosen for this service trip. Learning about the various global issues has always interested me as I intend to one day have a career that could allow me to make a difference, whether that means physically helping the people in unfortunate communities or even if it means to make their problems more known to the public, so more people are aware of the issues and can help.

Not only does Me to We allow students to help people of various countries, but by doing this it gives the students insight on the problems people all over the world face. The experience can empower the students to continue to make changes throughout their life. After all, reading about the problems and physically seeing them by travelling to the places that experience these problems are two very different things.

All money for my trip needs to be raised by January 20th.  The money raised would pay for most of the costs associated with the travel and allow me to travel to Kenya with the other selected students from Digby Regional High School on a trip of a lifetime.

Thank you in advance for all donations!
