The Scunthorpe Alphas are an exciting new team based in North Lincolnshire.
We have been formed by individuals with playing, coaching and management experience both within American Football as well as other parts of our professional and personal lives. Using a combined 80 years of experience, we are striving to create something that we feel is special and contributes in a positive way to the development of American Football in our region as well as working with and supporting our community to develop health and well-being in the region through the provision of an alternative sport*. Our motivation and goal is to create a long-term, high performing, sustainable and successful club that helps to contribute in a positive way to the health and well-being of the North Lincolnshire area.
In the short time we have been existed, we have made significant progress in most areas of the club, including finding out home venue and recruiting a full complement of coaches with playing and coaching experience at all levels within Britball, up-to and including Premiership level, with one of our number previously also coaching within the GB Juniors set up. We also have so far had success in recruiting numerous players within various playing groups (including youth, junior, adult men's and women’s teams).
However, American Football is an entirely amateur sport and there are significant set up costs associated with forming a new team. North Lincolnshire is an area that has significant challenges with regard to poverty as well as health & wellbeing**, which are often linked. With this in mind, and in order to make the sport that we love and our club as accessible as possible to prospective players, we want to purchase a supply of club kit (helmets, pads etc.) so that our community are not prevented from taking the opportunity to play due to the fact that they can’t afford it. For example, the cheapest helmets available to purchase are around £150 each and pads start at around £80, but both can vary and can be anywhere up to £600 combined.
We have other set-up costs including playing & training balls, training equipment such as cones etc., pitch marking equipment as well as the uniforms in which we will play.
All of this means that we are asking for help and support from you, to enable us to realise our dream of delivering our sport to our community.
Any donations would be so appreciated, and would go directly towards the purchase of training and playing equipment, so that we can build the future of our club and put our community back on the American Football map in the UK.

Child health
In Year 6, 19.9% (312) of children are classified as obese. Levels of teenage pregnancy, GCSE attainment, breastfeeding and smoking at time of delivery are worse than the England average.
Adult health
In 2012, 32.0% of adults are classified as obese, worse than the average for England. The rate of alcohol related harm hospital stays was 632. This represents 1,049 stays per year. The rate of self-harm hospital stays was 143.5, better than the average for England. This represents 237 stays per year. The rate of smoking related deaths was 335, worse than the average for England. This represents 321 deaths per year. Estimated levels of adult excess weight and smoking are worse than the England average.

Local authorities are ranked from 1 to 326, with 1 being most deprived and 326 being least deprived. According to the ID 2010 score, North Lincolnshire ranks as 120th most deprived area in England.

The Gross Disposable Household Income per head figure for 2010 for Northern Lincolnshire was £13,122, well below the English average of £15,931…in the ten years from 2000 Northern Lincolnshire has closed the gap on the average for Yorkshire and Humber, with the per head figure increasing by 37.4% compared to 34.4% average…but it is still losing ground to the national figure, with an increase of 40.0% over the period. The definition of income deprivation used includes both families that are out-of-work and families that are in work but who have low earnings. North Lincolnshire is ranked as 103rd most deprived local authority in England. Of the 100 Lower Super Output Areas within North Lincolnshire, nine rank in the 10% most deprived in England for income deprivation. 11.7% of all North Lincolnshire’s households reported that they struggle to pay bills.
Having insufficient money is a significant cause of poor health and inequalities in health. Living in poverty affects every part of people’s lives, including the ability to access decent housing, education, training, employment, transport and health services. Being poor also limits access to affordable credit, making it harder for people to lift themselves out of poverty, and making them vulnerable to unmanageable debt.
Family poverty is associated with a range of undesirable outcomes for young children and can have long lasting consequences in adolescence and beyond. For example, children who live in poverty are almost twice as likely to be living in temporary accommodation and poor housing. Children living in poor housing are more likely to suffer health problems than other children. They are also more likely to miss school as a result of disruption caused by moves between accommodation, and to do less well at school than their peers because of problems linked to their home life. These problems result in poor prospects for children including low attainment and children leaving school and classed at Not in Employment, Education or Training, contributing to a cycle of deprivation which is difficult to break.
