Spoiler Alert! The Cancer is Back!

 Some History:
Back in the 1990’s I fought a five and a half year battle with Cancer and although I beat it eventually, it did wipe me out financially and forced me into bankruptcy.  That was the second time I had to start my life over from zero. When the bankruptcy was finished, Kathy and I celebrated the new beginning by getting married. She must have been nuts I was flat broke :>)

Recently:
The last couple of years I have been forced to downsize my consulting practice due to my dwindling stamina (a result of my long term coronary issues). I have cut it to the bone to a point where we are still getting by, but we also had to downsize our lifestyle to fit our greatly reduced income. Those of you who know me from the SMB Community, this is why I have been absent from the events where you normally see me at the last couple years.

Currently:
In January I went in for an unrelated issue, an ultrasound of the arteries in my neck. What they accidently found was an undetermined mass in the right side of my neck. Well another ultrasound and a biopsy and it was determined that the cancer I beat in the 90’s, was back for another shot at me. The doctors are currently shuffling me back and forth trying to figure out the best course of action. Normally they would start with another surgery but they are afraid my heart is not strong enough to make it through the anesthesia. I have also already had the normal lifetime limit of radiation. Now they are trying to come up with the least life threating approach to fight the cancer.

The Request, You Knew It Was Coming:
This is the hardest part for me. I am never one to ask for help. I am usually the one doing the helping. Knowing the kind of expenses that are coming and my limited means for covering them I am asking for your help to fight this battle. I need help to get through the impending mountain of bills and expenses, while I fight this rematch with cancer and hopefully defeat it once again.

I cannot go into this knowing I will come out the other side in bankruptcy once again. I also cannot risk leaving my wife in a position if I don’t make it where she is going to be forced into bankruptcy. So my request of you is this. Please help out with whatever you can afford to donate to this worthy (well I think it is worthy) cause. Please do not borrow money to donate or get yourself in a bind, but if you can spare a few bucks to help fund my battle Kathy and I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you for whatever help you can offer, and if you can’t help with money, positive vibes are still much appreciated.

 Gratefully,
HandyAndy

“Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and/or a Joyous Anything Else you may celebrate”

I apologize for not updating you more during the year. I have not had much good news and I did not want to be that guy that bitches and moans all the time.
Had a real scare back in September from my regular eye doctor. He said he found diabetic retinopathy and it was pretty severe. He sent me to a retinal specialist. Well the appointment got postponed a couple times and then the specialist had a medical issue of her own so I was setup with another specialist. Needless to say I was worrying and stressing all this time, but when I finally got in to see the surgeon early in December, he said the original doctor had exaggerated the severity and I was not advanced enough to treat yet. This was a great relief and a wonderful gift for the holiday season.

The pain continues to be a problem and they have increased the pain meds and nerve blockers to the point I am no longer comfortable driving. This does put an extra burden on Kathy but she remains a real trooper and my rock.

I go back in March/April for another ultrasound to make sure nothing is growing back in my neck and then mid-year for another colonoscopy because I am now on the annual plan as I keep flunking them.

So once again I Thank You All for your support emotionally, spiritually and financially I would not have been able to make this journey without you!

Kathy & I wish you Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Hello Gang,

Well it has been a few months since my last update and since I find myself smack dab in the middle between Purim and Easter it seemed like a good day for an update.

Kathy is going GREAT you would never even know she had such major surgery only 3 months ago.

Although very grateful to be cancer free once again I am becoming more and more frustrated with the seemingly endless pain. I was at the doctor earlier this week and he said I had built up a tolerance to the meds so he increased the narcotics and the nerve blockers exactly the opposite of what I was hoping for by now. It is almost a year now since my surgery. I saw the endo doctor a few weeks ago and it seems my TSH is out of control once again, so he is also adjusting the dosage of those meds also. Anyone else think maybe all these meds are fighting with each other.

But the good news is I am still here and able to bitch and moan like an old woman :>)

In case you had not noticed I am not on FB much anymore, maybe after the election is over, it just annoys me to see seemingly intelligent people reduced to their lowest common denominator and resorting to name calling instead of reasonable discussion. I have no patience for such childishness.

Anyways if you are looking to reach me without FB my email remains the same Andy “at” SBS-Rocks dot com

Hope you partied like a rock star the last couple of days or you are going to have a Great Easter.
Thank You for Your Support,
Andy

“Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and/or a Joyous Anything Else you may celebrate”

Thankx to all of you and my great doctors and their medical staff. I just received the best present one could hope for. It was not wrapped in shinny paper nor delivered by Santa but I could not have been happier!
A few minutes ago I got a message from my Endo Doctor and it read:
---------------------------------
Andy,
Your lab results are attached.
Your thyroglobulin level (after Thyrogen stimulation) is 0.9, which is very low. This is reassuring.

Your whole-body I-131 scan also showed no abnormal areas of uptake to suggest any remaining metastatic thyroid cancer.

We will discuss further surveillance the next time I see you.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Dr. Lambeth
--------------------------------

So once again I Thank You All for your support emotionally, spiritually and financially I would not have been able to make this journey without you!

Kathy & I wish you Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy and Healthy New Year,
One Happy HA

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
As I look back over this very eventful year I cannot help but think how very thankful I am for all of you and how much you have supported me emotionally, physically and financially. I have been though 60 some odd Thanksgivings but never one that meant as much to me as this year. When I got the news early this year that the cancer had returned, I was ready to throw in the towel. I was in no shape for this fight physically or mentally. If not for the incredible outpouring of strength and support from all of you, I would not have been able to fight this battle. So this year it will be all of you that are on my mind and I cannot find the words to express how thankful I am. I had no idea so many of you would rush to my side to help me in whatever way you could.

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday, always enjoyed the big together. Lately I have missed the big party, everyone is busy or moved to the other side of the country. Last year and it was just Kathy, Johnny and me. We did invite a couple he works with who recently moved out here and have no one to celebrate with, so at least we will not be alone, nor will they.

I finally got my I-131 full body scan scheduled for December 4th, this will let us know if the cancer was contained to my neck or if it has started to spread. It will also determine whether or not I need more radiation or not. However it goes I have the strength to face it thanks to You All, so from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU and have a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING and to my international friends have a GREAT THURSDAY I am thinking of you as well!

Andy, Jose here from the NT Engineering Association. I wasn't aware that you had cancer before, and I am sorry it has returned. I myself have been unemployed six years and on food stamps and welfare, and also in bad health, I had a diabetic stroke and was in the hospital in 2012 for a week, I think I may have a tumor, but the blood tests have been negative, I just don't understand why I also have very little stamina. I hope you are back in good health again soon. God Bless.
