Matusadona Lion Project

The Matusadona Lion Project was first started in 2014 in Matusadona National Park of Zimbabwe.

In the 1990's the park once held Africa's second highest density of lions, > 100, but this figure had dropped to an estimated 28 lions by 2005.

This drop was attributed to a loss of prey because of the rising water levels of man-made Lake Kariba, upon which the park sits, yet the park was still deemed a 'viable' area for lions by experts.

However, no dedicated research had studied the ecology of this population or investigated other threats the population may face.

Since 2014 the study has identified 4 resident prides in the park and some alarming facts. Female cub mortality is very high, and there is a distinct lack of breeding males migrating into the area alongside little to no migration of females. Such factors are CRUCIAL in keeping a population alive longterm.

Conflict with communities outside the park is very high and trophy hunting is possibly impacting the population further.

The park is set within the larger Sebungwe region of Zimbabwe which also holds other National Parks and wildlife areas. To ensure these larger wildlife populations survive here such areas need to remain connected to one another, but this connectivity is diminishing everywhere from human activity.

The project, has completed 3 years of detailed survey and monitoring work in Matusadona and is now looking expand its efforts into the surrounding community areas of the park and see how best the lion population and its habitat can be conserved.

For 2017 the project is looking to employ local staff, fund a second research vehicle for staff, deploy vitally important GPS collars on study lions, carry out camera trap surveys and help work towards reducing human-lion conflict incidence.

Funding is very scarce and hard to source for the less glamourous but incredibly important items such as fuel, batteries and food!

Any help you can provide would go a very long way in the beautiful but neglected area.

The African lion is losing its battle as the King of Beasts and small Kingdoms like Matusadona NP must be better protected. Please help.

Thank you
