Matt Duffy is a 33 year old young man, whose life is in jeopardy, due to severe complications of Type 1 brittle Diabetes. There is medical equipment available which would be very helpful, but his insurance and medical assistance program will not cover it. Without this medical equipment, his Diabetes is severely damaging his organs. Matt currently has 34% functionality in his kidneys, and has lost 70% of his vision leaving him legally blind. Matt also has hypoglycemic unawareness, meaning his blood sugar can drop dangerously low when he is sleeping and he may not be able to correct it.
The medical equipment comes with a hefty price tag of approximately $300 a month and an additional $500 every 9 months. Again, his insurance covers none of this. Matt has gone through appeals and has fought to get this changed due to the fact that it truly is a life-saving necessity, that will help to prolong his life. Without this device, Matt's body will continue to shut down. We need your help!
In the past few years Matt was forced to give up his long-time dream of "working the boats" as a deep-sea fisherman. Due to his Diabetic complications, he has had to close the door on that dream. Matt is a fighter and is now pursuing an education at Cuesta College receiving assistance for his low vision disability. He is receiving TOP grades, is excited about learning, and is a joy to those who know him, exemplifying his tenacious spirit. Matt is truly dedicating himself to continuing to persevere, both for his education and his health.
Matt truly needs our help!!! He is a most active participant in his own healthcare, impressing his doctors with his attitude and willingness to fight. Matt has been alcohol and drug-free for over 9 years and spends much of his free time helping others in recovery. He also volunteers for a local Diabetes organization helping those afflicted with the same illness. We implore you to donate, without this life-saving equipment his future looks bleak. Matt is an incredibly proud man and this has been a difficult step, but his need is so very GREAT. Your help is of the utmost importance.
