Matt Barbee's Medical Fund

On Thursday, December 14th, Matt Barbee was driving home from his shift as a Police Officer in Tigard, Oregon when he got a flat tire. He pulled over to the side of the freeway and called for a tow truck. While waiting for help, an alleged drunk driver slammed into Matt's parked car. His car was completely totaled and crushed Matt inside. They had to cut the roof off the car to get him out and he had to be life flighted to the hospital and was in critical condition. He suffered extensive trauma to his head and neck, along with other serious injuries and required surgery.

Matt's future is unknown at this time and the road to recovery is long.

Matt has been married for almost 19 years and has three young children. His daughter is a stroke survivor and continues to have seizures and learning disabities which requires daily assistance. Matt and his wife Sherrie just bought their dream fixer- upper farm house in the country and were in the process of slowly remodling  it when this happened.

Matt has always been a loving, giving person with a great sense of humor. Anyone that knows him, even in passing, has a "Matt" story.  He is so loved and we can't wait to tell and show him how much. He has never been one to enjoy giving tickets, so his main job is to respond to 911 calls and help people. He got into the police field for this reason and loves what he does. He is very talented in calming people down in tense situations and is known as a "helper." He would give you the shirt off his back and is always doing charitable acts both in his community and among his close friends.

Matt's whole life was being a police officer, an active dad, a farmer and doing construction projects around the house. Due to his injuries, he will more than likely suffer chronic pain, have limitations/disabilities and not return to the career he loved as an officer.

Because he was off-duty, the burden and financial stress it is causing and will continue to cause will be detrimental to his family. His wife is having to commute 100+ miles a day to the hospital to support and advocate for Matt's care, along with working and taking care of the kids.

The house is going to have to have accommodations for Matt to come home, they are going to have to hire a caregiver for Matt while his wife is at work, and somehow supplement his income. Any donations are appreciated.

The Barbee family has no family in Oregon and appreciates any and all help. They are very grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received so far.

The goal is to be able to have Matt come home, and recover without the stress and burden that his inability to work will have on the family.

Recovering from a brain injury is a very long and slow process and we want to enable him to focus on his recovery.
