Let me tell you a little bit about us: we're a team of dedicated and enthusiastic people who are passionate about universal health coverage for all. We have come together in pursuit of one goal - to bring healthcare workers to the most vulnerable and underserved populations around the world. You might say to us “but there are already thousands of NGOs who are doing just that and who are doing a great job!”

We would wholeheartedly agree with that and would ask you one question - what about holiday periods, extended sick leave, maternity leave... what happens to the staffing levels in these already fragile health centres? Well in our experience many NGOs struggle to cover short term absences of staff - either services are reduced, inadequately carried out or in worst case scenarios shut down completely! You may think that this is not a big problem but let me assure you that this is very serious. Imagine the nearest health centre to you is a 7 hour walk away - you can imagine that you would wait either until someone with a car is travelling there or until that burning pain in your stomach got unbearable. Imagine then that after waiting until you are in a serious condition you reach the clinic and it is closed! If that doesn't convince you, let me remind you that babies wait for no one, and sick babies even less.

Mirna, Ghizlaine and I (the founders of Fill That Gap) have all witnessed firsthand the detrimental consequences of gaps in human resources for health during our humanitarian missions and we are convinced we can offer a solution to the problem. What we do is to work with partner NGOs in low resource countries who completely depend on international medical volunteers/staff. We identify their human resource needs, and foresee gaps in their service so that we can help them to manage their own challenges.
