Remember your hometown -- and its most unique building?
We do, and we're working to bring it back to life on the Main Street of Bottineau, North Dakota, a hockey-loving town of 2,500 that's just 12 miles south of the Canadian border. We formed a nonprofit organization to launch the Stone Bank Project and save this 1900 landmark that originally housed the county's first bank. But don't worry, Elizabeth Warren: It won't be a bank anymore. It might house the local tourism office, an Internet coffee shop for community college kids or a short-order cafe to complement the single-screen theater across the street. But in any case, we'll save it for another 100+ years rather than let the City Council raze it -- if you help!
The State Historical Society of North Dakota has given our project a $20,000 grant, but it must be matched dollar for dollar. We have nearly $5,000 in hand, and this week we're launching a "Class of '72 Campaign" to raise $7,200 from the 70 other members of our graduating class at Bottineau High School. But this is a small town, and it has only so much charitable giving to go around. That's why we need you go-funders from all around the world.
You might never travel to remote Bottineau, N.D., and personally enjoy the warm glow of these stones, but if you help us match our grant and save this community cornerstone, it should warm your heart, no matter where you live. Losing these historic structures hurts everyone, but rebuilding them lifts us all.
If you can give $100, you'll stand alongside the Bottineau Class of '72, but whatever amount you can give will be greatly appreciated and gratefully acknowledged. This campaign needs to raise $7,200 by March 1 so we can raise our new roof and back wall in the spring, in time to meet the April 15 deadline for our matching grant.
