Hello! I am Valeria Carraturo, an aspiring student of MSc in Corporate Communication at IE University in Madrid. 

I’ve been admitted to the program 1 month ago and I've been granted the IE Fellowship Award. This is an exciting opportunity to fulfil my vision of becoming a communications and marketing professional in the philanthropic sector.

Unfortunately, after looking into different financing options, I still have to raise 4.500 € to cover tuition and living costs in order to study. Here’s a breakdown of my expenses and how I plan to cover them:

Can you tell us more about yourself? What is your vision for the future? 

I am half German, half Italian currently living in Geneva, Switzerland. I hold a BA in Translation and while finishing my bachelor I decided to move into the non-profit sector.

Since then, I've been working for a Swiss non-profit that supports women’s empowerment. This experience taught me the importance of giving back and a key insight that even small steps can make a big impact in someone’s life.

I believe that this master can equip me with the skills and network necessary to step-change my impact in the non-profit sector. As I am both passionate about communications and social causes, my vision is to excite a large number of donors, communities and volunteers to get involved in changing the world for the better.

What is the problem and what are you planning to do about it?

The biggest challenge in philanthropy is DISTRUST. Many donors often question whether their funds actually reach the ‘people in need’ and if they are spent in effective ways. This is also why ‘millennials’ engage in philanthropy differently than 30 years ago. They tend to donate less in terms of money but prefer getting actively involved and being ‘part of the change’.

REPUTATION is the most valuable asset a philanthropic organization has. It’s key for attracting donors, inspiring volunteers, and partnering with governments and local communities to make the biggest impact. I am passionate about creating communication plans to engage NGO stakeholders across multiple touch-points to build lasting relationships with donors, governments, and communities, which are the foundation of sustainable philanthropic ventures.
