Master of Public Health

Donation protected
My name is Kenneth Nandala  and I live in Jinja, Uganda. I am the eighth born in a family of 10. I am raising money to start a Masters of  Public Health program that commences on 4th February 2019 at Uganda Christian University.

Growing up,  there was a moment when my father lost his job and I was not able to be in school, a futune teller who came home said I would never study beyond S.2 level of high school. As a young boy, I almost believed him because everything for me seemed to be falling apart. Two years later my father passed on from Diabetes, and I was left without hope for continuing my education. I started thinking that maybe this guy could have been right after all.
Lucky enough my sister Doreen picked me up and put me through school for 5 years until I finished high school.  I have now so far acquired a Diploma in Environmental Health Science, Advanced Diploma in Health leadership and Management and a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Health Science from Cavendish University Uganda with support from friends and through hard work doing jobs that other people might call odd jobs of cleaning and low level jobs
By the grace of God, I have not only been able to accomplish all this school, but I have also been able to support my wife through school for her diploma program. However hard it has been for me, God has always turned my obstacles into opportunities.

I am now looking forward to pursuing a Masters of  Public Health program which I believe is an ideal course for me given my related interest, experience, and desire to giveback to my community. I look forward to acquiring more knowledge  and appropriating it into the different spheres of my interactions for health promotion and disease prevention.

I currently have an opportunity working in a remote community of Budondo sub county in Jinja district, Uganda, as a Health inspector.  A number of issues amongst the villages in which I work relate to health especially in regards to water, sanitation and hygiene. I have been able to promote health by conducting trainings on using safe and clean water, encouraging construction of low cost sanitary facilities, advocating for spring protection to ensure a safe water chain, and encouraging routine medical checks and appropriate medical referrals.

Much work still needs to be done as the situation is still not at its best. I see my people dying of preventable diarrheal diseases, looming jigger infestation in homes and now Neglected Tropical Diseases like trachoma and Leprosy that can be prevented and effectively controlled  when selected public health approaches are combined and delivered locally.
This, I believe, is the main reason why I would like to upgrade and be in position to address these issues by becoming more knowledgeable as I approach diverse social and health needs that i encounter in these communities.
This will enable me to contribute to to the holistic developmental values of these communities in which I work as well as understand in depth the meaning of servanthood leadership as I impact social and behavioral change. I can admit it is not easy to juggle work and school at the same time, but I won't give up.

I could therefore use your help making the imposible more possible. Though I have so far been able to cover $1560  for accommodation and $204 for Transport cost, there are still many expenses not yet covered for the next 2 years at Uganda Christian University .  Here are the major expenses that I still need to cover:

*Tuition Fees                    -------$600 x 6modules = $3600
*Meals                                 -------$ 71   x 6 modules =   $426
*Research and Books ------$1000                           =  $1000
 TOTAL                                                                                         $5,026

Any amount donated will help; pennies make a pound. I will also appreciate a scholarship if you have one to offer. If you cannot donate, kindly share my story as this is just as effective as donating. Finally, I would be grateful for your prayers. For those who have met with me, I  naturally almost always have a smile on my face and I’m famous for my positive vibe, please support my dreams and keep me smilling.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far! I am very touched and humbled by the outpouring of support and donations.

Many blessings, Kenneth
