Save the Massillon Library Pillars

Donation protected
Massillon community, we need your help.

The main building of the Massillon Public Library was constructed in 1936 and features a Greek Revival style entrance with four Corinthian columns.  The building is considered an iconic landmark of the community.  Unfortunately, those columns are now in dire need of replacement, a project that is expected to cost the library $57,000.

When a paint crew started to scrape the hollow pillars, they discovered that unseen moisture had caused them to become rotten from the inside out.

The columns need to be completely replaced.   Structural steel columns will be installed and surrounded by a fiberglass reinforced polyester composite material so that we will never have a repeat of this situation.   This will also allow the intricate design of the column’s capital (the carved part at the top) to be replicated.   Being within the boundaries of the Massillon Historic District, the library wishes to preserve the original look of the building whenever possible.

It goes without saying that a project this size is a very large expense for the library, and any support towards this project will be much appreciated.  Generous donations have already been received from the Gessner Family Foundation and from a private donor which total $15,000, but that leaves a large balance.

Could we count on you to help preserve your beautiful library for the next generation?

We appreciate your support!
