Marry me, Memily!

Donation protected
I'm planning on becoming a wedding celebrant.

It's something I've been thinking of doing for a couple of years now, but a few things have been holding me back.

One of those things was marriage equality. I don't identify as queer, but many of my friends do, and I try to be the best ally I can be. The ugly inclusion of that line about a man and woman only wasn't ever going to be something I was comfortable with saying (let alone hearing as a wedding guest!). Thankfully, same sex marriage has finally become legal in Australia, removing that hurdle and opening up the possibility of some of the best dang weddings this country has ever seen. I want to be a part of that.

Unfortunately for me, another thing holding me back is upfront costs. I currently choose to live my life in order to be happiest, but that does tend to mean that between the two jobs I love and the rent I pay, there's not much left to save. It's a sacrifice I am usually ok with, but it does restrict me from turning pipe dreams into reality (sometimes that's a good thing, but not in this instance!).

Here's what I need your help with, if you would like to support me, or book me in super early as your very own celebrant:

1. CHC41015 - CERTIFICATE IV IN CELEBRANCY - this online course will cost $735. Doing it via distance will take the longest amount of time, but it's also the cheapest way to do it. There are no in-person courses available in Tasmania, so if I wanted to complete it faster, I'd have to go to the mainland, which would also cost more. But there's no hurry for me at this point in time, and anyone who may want me as their celebrant will likely not be planning to get married within the next six months or so anyway. These things all take time.

2. Once I complete the course, as an aspiring marriage celebrant I'll be required to pay an application fee of $600 to the Attorney-General's department.

3. If my application is successful, I'll also need to pay the annual $240 registration charge (or part thereof, depending on the timing of my registration—this is paid each July, so if I can stick to my aspirational timeline then I'll be paying around that time).

4. Finally, but probably firstly, I need to legally whack an M at the front of my first name, particularly if it's going to be all over a bunch of peoples' important documents. A Change of Name in Tasmania costs $192.45. It's something I've been meaning to do for years and it's important to me.

5. Any extra donations received will go toward branding and stationery, website costs, and fees charged by GFM (to be honest, it's mostly the latter).

Your support will also hold me accountable to completing my mission. Thank you so much for supporting me. I look forward to getting out there and marrying all sorts of amazing people!

P.S. The reward levels are optional, you are welcome to donate any amount. Anything helps!
