MariMUN in Panama

As I entered my very first Model United Nations conference in the tenth grade, I had absolutely no clue what I was getting myself into. A few hours later though, I had already made my first speech, learnt the concept of a "resolution", and most important of all, made like-minded friends interested in politics, history, and debating. Three years and several conferences later, I think back at all the things I've learnt thanks to MUN... I now have a greater understanding of the world around me, and am a fervent believer in diplomacy when it comes to conflict resolution.

This is precisely why we need your help.

Model United Nations is an academic extracurricular activity in which students participate in simulations of the United Nations. In said simulations, student delegates represent member states of the United Nations and are placed on various committees designed to address and solve global issues.

As president of the club, I have seen timid speakers and insecure writers flourish into competitive and competent individuals. It is easy to be distracted by the divisive rhetoric we see every day in the world around us, but us students are learning how to build bridges, rather than tear them down. When we prepare for conferences, we research real issues affecting nations, communities, and individuals. Model United Nations encourages us to look out at the world around us rather than remain focused on our little bubbles. When going to conferences such as the one in Panama, we will have the opportunity of convening with other students from all over the world while putting our solutions and ideas together in order to create comprehensive resolutions addressing the topics we will have researched.

The Model United Nations club at Marianopolis College has a history of success and discipline, and has been striving to improve its club experience for the past 32 years. The delegation hopes to continue its legacy through its participation in these conferences; however, the cost of these trips (which includes travel, hotel, and registration fees) has become a financial burden on some of the students who wish to participate. With the many benefits this club provides to students, it is my responsibility to make sure that cost never prohibits anyone from participating in any conference.

Thank you for taking the time to read my little sales pitch, and on behalf of the MariMUN delegation, thank you for your generous donations.
