WOMAN BURNS AT BURNING MAN 2017!

Burning Man, the world renowned fire arts festival in the Northern Nevada desert, will host an incredible interactive sculpture this year of a woman rising above the Appalachian Mountains, calling for peace. She was a sister, a daughter and a determined young woman. And now she will grace the desert with that strength, and with her hope.

She is built with the effort and dedication of volunteers from Texas, California, Oregon, Washington, and from where once she called home, West Virginia.

Yet we need more help. We need you!

Burning Man is a participants only experience, and we need your participation to complete this vision of Margareta Appalachia. Your contributions will help us transport her to the desert, or the playa as it’s known. Our goal will enable our volunteers to get her safely from Texas to Nevada and ensure a glorious week sharing her secrets with the desert. A week that will culminate with a burn in effigy at midnight on Friday to celebrate the work, the mountain, and the woman. …

It started with a dream of remembering a sister. It has grown as a way to share the ineffable beauty of nature, through the lense of Appalachia, and to reflect on our relationship with the ecology around us, and we within it.  Margareta stands boldly amidst the mountains with the Sign of Peace in her hand and steady uplifted gaze to remind us that our power is based in rootedness and intention.

She is made primarily of wood and is intended as a space for people to connect, reflect and explore- the walkable exterior wraps around the mountains with decking in the back to face the rising sun - and the contemplative interior is entered through a 'mine-shaft' leading to a vaulted center that lights up with an ancient Carboniferous forest.

The challenge of bringing her coal-studded hair, 22' tall wooden body, and a fire-revealed 8' metal Angel inside with the crew of volunteer angels who are building her remains enormous.  Everyone involved is donating countless hours of talent and love and raw materials.   We will use 100% of donation towards covering project costs, including the angel and our transportation.

This project exists because of dreamers, and remembrances of the dream are important.  We appreciate any amount you can provide.  We are planning to provide our supporters with tokens of our appreciation, following the fiery celebration of peace: a project sticker, anthracite necklaces, for instance.
