A proposal by the all-girl team of fourth, fifth, and six graders (who call themselves the Marfa Martians) was accepted for a mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2019. The girls are working to further refine and test their project, The Eradication of Growth and Bacteria in Microgravity, and will submit the final experiment for a June launch date.

This fall, Marfa students in grades 4 - 12 competed in a school-wide project hosted by the Student Spaceflights Experiment Program (SSEP) where students design real microgravity experiments intended to fly in low Earth orbit aboard  the International Space Station. The goal of SSEP is to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by giving students access to space.

The school-wide project was made possible with financial support from Apache, Subaru, Texas Space Grant at UT Austin, and Workforce Solutions Borderplex.

Marfa's top three projects were sent to the Air and Space Museum in D.C.  There, a panel of scientists chose the winning experiment by the Marfa Martians for launch into space next year. An astronaut will conduct the experiment in microgravity aboard the ISS while the Marfa team of girls performs a control experiment here on earth. Students will share the results of their experiment with fellow students and the community, and present their research at a conference in Washington, D.C. later this summer.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help cover the cost of travel and fees for the girls to attend the conference in D.C. Please support our project!

After last week's fundraiser by local Marfa musicians and a few more individual on-line donations, we've reached 60% of our goal to send the Marfa Martians to Washington, D.C. this summer for the SSEP Conference!

We have more fundraising events coming up over the next few weeks and $3840 to raise toward our $10,000 goal. Please help us spread the word; donations are tax-deductible and any amount helps these young scientists.
