Marc started experiencing alarming symptoms three weeks ago. While at work, symptoms became so severe he went to the Emergency Room. Marc was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS); a rare autoimmune condition that causes his immune system to attack his nerves.
GBS is extremely painful throughout all the muscles in the body, while also causing weakness, abnormality walking, problems with coordination, and weakness of the arms and legs. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing the whole body.
Marc has lost partial function of his body, reflexes, balance, etc. Treatment can help, but this condition can't be cured. Marc has been in the hospital for the last week receiving 5 rounds of plasma exchanges.
Among adults recovering from Guillain-Barre syndrome:
-About 80 percent can walk independently six months after diagnosis
-About 60 percent fully recover motor strength one year after diagnosis
-About 5 to 10 percent have very delayed and incomplete recovery
