Marci Bydlon's Cancer Story:
In January of 2015, Marci was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer, Stage 2.  Surgery, Chemo, and Radiation were used to treat the site and later that year, tests came back clean.

Then in March of 2017 they found Breast Cancer. The site was so small that they felt it was removed during the biopsy. They did a lumpectomy and followed that with radiation. She finished that treatment in July of this year and tests were clean.

And then October came......
On October 9th she went into the emergency room in Maple Grove with severe abdominal pain. She thought it was from a hernia in her abdomen. The medical staff did an ultrasound and then proceeded to run a CT scan so they knew what they were dealing with. What they found was fluid in the abdominal cavity and spots on her liver. They put in an order to have a liver biopsy done and performed a procedure called “Paracentesis” which is draining excess fluid from her abdominal cavity. The fluid comes from her liver not functioning properly. She went home to wait for a call to have the biopsy performed.

Monday October 16th found her in the Mercy Hospital Emergency room in even greater pain/discomfort.  She was admitted late that night and they started giving her pain medication. They performed another Paracentesis and did the liver biopsy on Tuesday the 17th. While we waited for the results, the medical staff worked to get her pain under control. Thursday, October 19th we found out the results of the biopsy: Metastatic Cervical Cancer on the Liver – Stage 4.

What does this mean? Her Cervical cancer from 2 years ago decided to reappear and went to the liver (Side note – this is Cervical cancer that metastasized to her Liver. It is NOT liver cancer). That said, this is a treatable cancer but it is NOT curable. It is termed stage 4 due to the fact that it originated on the Cervix and then showed up on another organ (there are multiple spots (or lesions) and they are on both lobes of the Liver).

She spent the weekend in the hospital and was released on Sunday, October 22nd to return home.
At this point they cannot do hernia surgery. The doctors and surgeon we spoke with are not overly concerned about the hernia as it is not obstructed at this time.
The fluid in the abdominal cavity is very irritating to the intestines and such and would basically undue the work of hernia surgery.

The plan was to do Chemo treatment every 3 weeks for 3 sessions and then do a scan to see how the liver was responding. They now are adjusting that to having more treatments before doing a scan . They feel that will give them a better picture of how the treatments are working (good or bad).
