Boardman Band: Marching For Wheels!

Hello! We are the Boardman Spartan Marching Band  from Youngstown, Ohio. We are going on our 90th year of existence and excellence, proud to be marching 180+ students on and off the field every friday in fall. This year, two of those students are Kaitlin and Blake Windt . Kaitlin and Blake have both been diagnosed with Freidreich's Ataxia  at birth, a severe combination of body-weakening syndromes that prevent the Windt's from normal activities like marching. With full support from parents Howard Windt and Chrissy Longley, the kids embrace their musical talents and positive personalities through marching with the Boardman Band. Their everyday wheelchairs get them through the school hallways just fine, but not on turf or grass where the band performs. While at band camp, we were lucky to borrow the facility's athletic wheelchair for Kaitlin to use. The wheelchair made it easy for Kailtlin to perform and easy for the volunteers who pushed her through the drill. Since then, we've been determined to secure a similar chair for the band to use with Kaitlin or any other student in need. Now with Blake coming up, we're going to need two! With your help, Kaitlin, Blake, and all future band members in need will be able to fully participate in the Tradition of Musical Excellence - The Boardman Spartan Marching Band!

We are feeling so very blessed by everyone's generosity. I just accepted a check from the St. Charles Knights of Columbus which puts us just under $1000 short of the updated goal. The Youngstown Vindicator just ran a nice story about Kaitlin and Blake Windt. We have an appointment next Wednesday at Miller's to get the kids fitted for chairs and discuss our options.

Thanks to everyone supporting this wonderful cause.

God Bless You All! We reached our initial goal of $5000 in less than a week! The "wheels are in motion" to purchase two chairs that will initially be used so Kaitlin and Blake can participate in Marching Band. We know several people who still want to donate so we increased the goal. We would like to start a scholarship fund in the name of the Windts. Thanks so much for your generous support.

Band President Nico Ruggieri will be sending individual Thank You messages but I just want to post this update to tell everyone how touched I am to see such generosity from so many in just a couple days. Thank you!

Thanks for a very successful kickoff tonight at the Jazz Concert and online. We collected $510 at the concert and, well, you can see the progress we're making online. There are lots of wonderfully generous people out there.
