Please join us in helping Paul and Melissa Nordquist with medical expenses. In February 2015, Paul was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. He has beaten the odds in large part because of treatment in New York at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in combination with treatment in Tacoma, WA. While he lives in Washington, Paul has traveled monthly to New York for treatment. In the last few weeks, Paul's health has declined and Melissa took a leave of absence from work. This week, Paul entered into hospice care. Money from this fundraiser will go towards their expenses during this difficult time. Please help us in supporting them.

About Paul:
Anyone who knows Paul Nordquist loves him! Paul is a quiet, humble soul with a wonderful sense of humor. He's a wealth of knowledge (think encyclopedia), a sharp mind, engaging conversationalist, generous and loving friend, and accomplished athlete. With the South End Rowing Club, Paul took 1st place in the North American Open Water Rowing Challenge, rowed to and from Petaluma and China Beach numerous times, competed in many a Tahoe Regatta, and helped win the triathlon against the Dolphins for many years. Paul has donated much of his time and energy to the rowing and open water communities, serving on the South End Rowing Club board and piloting scores of swims.

Paul grew up in Tacoma and he and his wife, Melissa, have made it home since 2010. See this wonderful recent video that captures their love of the area: http://www.windermerepc.com/meettheneighbors253/melissa-paul

It’s our pleasure now to give back to Paul.
Thank you.

Obituary

Paul Warren Nordquist

August 31, 1967 – August 14, 2018

Paul Nordquist died at home on August 14th after being diagnosed 3½ years ago with Stage IV colon cancer. He is survived by his wife of nearly 10 years, Melissa, his brother, Christopher, and his parents, Philip and Helen.

Paul grew up in Parkland, Washington, and graduated from Washington High School. He studied Ski Area Management at Colorado Mountain College and then received a BA in Philosophy at Pacific Lutheran University.

He had an interesting and varied career, working at Mammoth Mountain ski resort, the Great Northern Brewing Company, Abbott Laboratories, and Tacoma Bike. Outside of his work, Paul took great enjoyment from outdoor sports and community involvement. He was an adventurous skier, mountain and road cyclist, and open water rower.

Paul met his wife, Melissa, at the South End Rowing Club in San Francisco, where he rowed very heavy wooden boats and she swam in very cold water.

Always one to get involved and lend a hand, Paul served on the South End Rowing Club Board and was an active participant in many Club events. When he and Melissa moved to Tacoma, he joined the Bicycle Pedestrian Technical Advisory Group to assist in planning and development of bicycle-friendly transportation infrastructure.

Paul was kind and modest, informed, discerning, and disarmingly funny. He made friends easily and kept them. His easygoing demeanor belied the tremendous strength that allowed him to endure aggressive medical treatment in order to have more time with family and friends.

A service remembering Paul and celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 2:00 PM at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church by the Narrows in Tacoma. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made in his name to the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Major Taylor Project or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

It is with a heavy heart that I share this news from Melissa. Thank you all for the love and generosity with which you supported them:

“Paul died this morning with me by his side, a friend and brother near, and his best furry friend in his favorite spot between his legs. We believe he was peaceful and out of pain when he died, and for the day preceding.

I am certain Paul died knowing the extent of the love that his friends and family have for him. He was content, if not with dying, with the invaluable relationships he has nurtured all of these years.”
