MAKS racing, an all girls team from The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club have recently received an invitation to compete in the Saint Quay
Women's Match Racing Regatta, this is a grade one ISAF (the highest grade
possible) event and is the first round of the Women's International Match
Racing Series and will be raced in Elliot 6m. The regatta is located in Saint
Quay Portrieux, Côtes d'Armor, France and has been given the title of the
"˜Women's Elite Match Racing French Championship 2013'.
The event takes place from the 15th -19th May this year and so as you can tell it is very short notice. However, we have been training since the start of the year with a team composed of 4 girls from the RPAYC youth development program. We have been racing and training under the name of "˜MAKS Racing' and as you can imagine this is a huge opportunity for our team as we are so young. The team consists of Milly Bennett (19), Alice Tarnawski (19), Kajsa Doyle (19) and Seldon Coventry (16).
Our training consists of on water training in the yacht club's own Force 24's, off water strength and conditioning training as well as several sessions at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron sailing in their fleet of Elliot 6m. We have worked closely with our Coach Tom Spithill and have already seen great improvements to our results as a team.
In February this year MAKS Racing placed third in the CYCA's Marinassess Women's Match Racing Regatta, then travelled to New Zealand where we placed 6th in the 2013 CentrePort Youth Match Racing Regatta, the team who placed 5th then went on to win the 2013 Harken Youth Match Racing Regatta at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, MAKS racing were unable to compete in this regatta. Other recent achievements by various team members include:
· 3rd 2013 Melges 32 Nationals (Milly)
· 3rd NSW Teams Racing State Championships (Milly,Seldon)
· 1st Melges Young Guns and Sports Boat Regatta (Milly, Kajsa, Seldon)
· Sydney to Hobart Passage on an Alan Wright 32 (Seldon)
· 3rd (IRC) 2013 Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race (MAKS Racing)
· 5th 2012 Australian Youth Match Racing Nationals (Milly, Alice)
· 4th 2012 Laser Radial Youth World Championship (Milly)
As we have received our invitation for this regatta so late we are struggling to put together funding to compete in this event, which is a rare opportunity for a team so young to be invited to attend. It will cost around $8,650 for the team to compete so we would like to ask for your assistance in getting us to this regatta and ask if you could donate money/ sponsor us for the event. Any amount is much appreciated! Please let us know if there is anything we can do in return for your help! Any Money that is left over we will be donating to Sailors with disABILITIES for their great work!
