Ben doesn't know about this yet. And I'm not sure how he would feel about it...but I know that he deserves our help. I've known Ben since I was 7 years old and he has always been there when I needed him. We are raising money to help Ben purchase the tools and materials necessary to salvage Crackertail. If that turns out to be impossible the funds will be used towards acquiring a new boat.
For those of you who have had the pleasure of sailing with Ben, or having him help you out in life when you needed it most, you know that he is more than just a sailor. He is a true friend. An honorable man. And one of the hardest working and most passionate people I know. Ben has spent countless hours helping us when we were in need and now it is time to return the favor.
For those of you who have had the pleasure of sailing on, or in company, with Crackertail, over the years, you know, she was more than just a boat. She was magic in the water.
During Hurricane Dorian, Crackertail was pushed out of the mangroves from behind by a catamaran and in the process the backstay, boomkin and stern rail were trashed, then she found the only hard seawall in the harbor and bashed her side in for hours, she is holed bad and flooded. All of his tools ruined.
It's just a boat, they say. But Sometimes a boat is more than just a boat.
When you spend years rebuilding every aspect of the boat and every system it is more than just a boat.
When you spend years pinching pennies and scrapping and saving parts from other boats it is more than just a boat.
When you have sewn every piece of canvas with an antique hand crank sewing machine it is more than just a boat.
When it is the only place you have called home for 7 years it is more than just a boat.
When it has carried you safely, thousands of miles offshore, to new and exciting places, driven only by a piece of mechanical equipment you built yourself, it's more than just a boat.
When it is a living embodiment of passion, determination, and creativity it is more than just a boat.
When it has been the driving force for your life for 11 years its more than just a boat.
It is his life. Let's help get him back where he belongs...on the water!

I’ve known Ben since the third grade, he is one of my best friend’s older brother. These funds are to be spent on replaced Ben’s tools and other personal items that were destroyed along with his boat during Hurricane Dorian. Depending on the state of the boat, the remaining funds will be used for salvage operations, or in the alternative, put towards purchasing a different sailboat to restore.
