Make Art, No Walls!

€2,295 of €12,000 goal

Raised by 17 people in 28 months
The artist's residency at La Macina di San Cresci in Tuscany, Italy, invites you to fight for art around the world as we try to raise funds to allow 4 artists to live and work at La Macina for one month each. La Macina di San Cresci plans to make life-saving fellowship grants to threatened artists (from the following countries:  Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan). We are accepting applications from all types of artists, and we will offer our fellows a place where they can continue their work and their art so that their voices can continue to be seen and heard.

In countries ravaged by conflict, artists are often unable to produce work because of a lack of tools (in many cases there may not be paper to draw on, places to paint, video or camera equipment, etc.).

We want to support these artists and recognize their fortitude and perseverance in the face of such adversity. We want to take advantage of every opportunity to put the focus on threatened artists and help to protect and preserve their cultural and social heritage.

Our fundraising efforts will directly help artists who are the victims of war and violence, often living in miserable conditions rather than artists who use the suffering and misfortune of others to their own benefit.

The budget per artist is € 3000; it includes travel cost, rent, and other accommodation costs. It also includes a grant for the artist to cover his or her needs related to the residency, including art making materials and other expenses, as well as the assistance of staff to enrich the overall experience at La Macina.

At the end of residency, artists will have an open studio and lecture with a broader audience made up of professionals, art lovers, neighbors, and friends. This will be a great chance for the artists to share the work completed during the residency and talk about their experience.  A special book with all works of the artists and their biographies/artists’ statements will be published to help spread their stories around the world.
An exhibition will be organized at the end.

 Who Is Eligible?
Artists from the following countries:  Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan.

Applications are reviewed for artistic merit and the quality/potential of the applicant's work.

Who are we?

La Macina di San Cresci is an artist's residency located in a lovingly restored historical complex just outside the town of Greve in Chianti. La Macina consists of a church, La Pieve di San Cresci, dating from the 900's, and various living quarters, studios, and galleries. These buildings are broken up into spacious apartments and studios where our resident artists live, work, collaborate, and enjoy the Tuscan countryside together.

Our mission is to encourage the mobility of artists interested in exploring their ideas in a well appointed studio far from home; to develop a cultural exchange at local, national and international levels through the involvement and participation of foreign institutions, both public and private; to be a laboratory of experience where artist-teachers and young artists can work together.

In addition to the artists living at the residency, La Macina frequently hosts workshops, seminars, and classes ranging from plaster-casting and fresco painting to theatre productions and musical/ dance performances.

Our founders, Duccio Trassinelli and Mimma Verduci, are lifelong artists and art-lovers who restored this beautiful complex to promote dialogue between different cultures and offer the opportunity to develop work in a welcoming and collaborative environment set amongst the natural beauty of the Tuscan countryside. Duccio Trassinelli is a renowned Italian designer and former professor of design at the Institute of Industrial Design in Florence who has pieces in the MOMA NYC and Centre Pompidou permanent collections. Mimma Verduci is an architect educated at the University of Architecture in Florence. The two have been married for almost thirty years.

Why we need YOUR help!

Your participation in this fundraising effort is absolutely crucial, and we have many ways to reward your gifts.

Without your funds, we would never be able to bring four deserving artists to Italy and give them a chance to escape their problems and focus on their art.

You will be directly responsible for opening the borders and our home to artists in a very difficult situation.

In return, we extend our gratitude to you by sharing some of the art this place has inspired, in ways both large and small. Please take a look below at the various reward levels and choose one to suit you and your budget--and don't forget to share our efforts with your friends, family, and social media!

Upon collecting the first € 3000, we will publish a call for application and guidelines.
Then we will select the first artist to receive a fellowship.

More funds raised means more artists will be offered the possibility to practice their craft at La Macina.
