Makar's fund for autism treatment

$8,230 of $10,000 goal

Hi, my name is Yuliya Prushak. I am extremely lucky to live in Canada, but the rest of my family are in Belarus (Eastern Europe).
Meet my nephew Makar. He is four, and a few days ago he said ‘dada’ for the first time.

When he was almost three years old, he was diagnosed with speech delay and autism spectrum disorder. His mom started looking for help straight away only to realize that in Belarus there’s absolutely no help from the government for such kids. There’s no institution which provides diagnostics, therapeutic care or trains specialists. There are no protocols of treatment for autism, instead, such kids are offered a disablement certificate and are left on their own. There are only a few dedicated professionals (trained overseas) who work privately and have long wait lists. Makar was lucky to get into ABA sessions and seemed to be making quick progress.

Until a few months later, on her 35th birthay, his mom was diagnosed with cancer.
Meet Nadya, my sister, Makar’s mom.

It took Nadya about nine months, 8 rounds of chemo therapy and 17 radiation therapy sessions to recover. All family’s financial and emotional resources were directed at fighting her disease. As they couldn’t afford professional help any longer, Nadya and her husband continued educating and developing Makar to the best of their abilities. Unfortunately, the boy was severely traumatized by the intense atmosphere at home and by his mom’s hospital stays and her not feeling well after the aggressive treatments she received.  This inevitably hindered his progress.

Nadya is now free from cancer but full of worries. The time during which Makar wasn’t receiving help, the nine months that drained the family’s financial well-being and shook their emotional core is the time which must be made up for now. It is essential that Makar gets as much help as he can as soon as possible. Early intervention is his best chance for the future.

What needs to be done now:

1.      Tomatis listening therapy. Makar’s biggest problem is that he has significant auditory processing issues, basically, he hears speech but doesn’t understand the message. Tomatis consists of a 90-hour prescribed protocol. This 90 hours is broken up into 4 blocks with a 3 to 4 week break in between. Each block costs about $ 600.

2.       ABA therapy

3.       Sensory integration therapy

4.       Speech therapy

5.       Functional Communication Training

(overall, Makar needs 6-10 hours of therapeutic sessions per week, each therapy costing around $20 per hour, which totals up to 200$ per week)

6.       Medical treatment

7.       Gluten-free diet

The family will be grateful for any financial support to ensure that Makar gets treatment. The goal of 10 k will cover the expenses expected in 2017.
We thank you in advance for your support, and, please, help spread the word.

After I first posted about Makar and created a GoFundMe campaign for him we got overwhelming support from so many friends and strangers!!! Hardly a day goes by when Nadya and I don't say to each other how grateful we are for all the good your generous contributions have done to Makar. Unfortunately, Makar's rehabilitation is a process which may never cease. It requires an outstanding amount of courage, energy, resourcefulness, faith... all of which Nadya has. Well, most of the time. Because there are times when she is sad and weak, and so tired she starts to lose hope. And then she thinks about you, all the people who made a lot of things happen for her son, and she cheers up and keeps going.

There's one thing that doesn't depend on how strong or cheerful she is, though. In the post I'm sharing she is asking you guys to consider contributing to Makar's future again. Funds are running out again. The classes Makar takes to keep his current level of development cost my sister's family 100 US dollars per week. A lot more is necessary to help him progress to a new level. Every two months they see a biomedical correction specialist from Italy, whose consultations cost 1000 euro for one session. Although Makar has started Tomatis therapy in Minsk, the new data on his brain activity suggests that his old clinic can't guarantee the best results, while a course of Tomatis in Belgium is going to cost 6000 euro.
This is heartbreaking. There's no way my sister's family can get all this money alone. They need your help. It's hard to admit, but it's true.

Every little contribution is a brick in the road to Makar's future. Please, help us build this road!

Dear friends, this is an update to let you know how your donations are being spent.

The biggest chunk is set aside to cover the cost of the remaining cycles of Tomatis therapy.
Nadya has had Makar tested at an ASD centre in Saint Petersburg, Russia ( travel costs and the exam have been covered from your money).
The rest is going to pay for the medicines, Sensory Integration and Speech Therapy, as well as a tutor to accompany Makar at daycare for 4 hours a day.

Unfortunately, the funds are running out pretty quickly, so please, keep sharing Makar's story, tell your friends and encourage them to contribute. Every bit counts!

Dear friends,
It's been only two weeks, but due to your generosity, we can now cover the cost of all four Tomatis therapy rounds. The first session of the first round was today. I'll keep you posted about the remaining three cycles.

Another type of treatment that your money is going to is neuro-dynamic gymnastics which is aimed at improving brain function in kids with learning disabilitites.

What's next?
Nadia is now looking into going to Saint Petersburg and Moscow to see ASD specialists there.
