My family is myself (Sarah), my husband David, and our two kids Alice (2yo) and Emmett (4mo). Last year, I had to go on medical leave and lost my job as a result. In March we lost our car and in July we lost our home. By selling off everything that wasn't a necessity for our family, we managed to put together the $1400 we needed to pay the application fee ($100), security deposit ($700), and first month's rent ($600) on a 1 bedroom apartment in the less than desirable part of Sacramento. Losing my job last year as the primary breadwinner really messed us up financially and we are desperate to recover. The $1300 we saved for the apartment would have been best put towards a savings but without it, we would have been living in the car a friend is letting us make payments on because no one could take us in. Unforenately, this means any money my husband earns at work goes straight to whatever bills we can manage to pay and old bills from our previous home take up a good chunk of that. Right now, we're about $1000 behind on the various bills we need to pay to keep things going and we have nothing left to sell.
My husband works 50-70 hours a week trying to support us. I'm trying to find a job on the weekends because we can't afford to send our children to daycare so I can work during the day too. We're on food stamps, so luckily we have food to feed our kids and ourselves.
Our credit histories were basically garbage after my lost job, the lost car, and the lost home. We cannot get loans or credit cards to try and get back to a level playing field where my husband's income can cover our expenses.
With $1000 we could catch up on our electric bill, gas bill, make sure our next month's rent is paid, and make sure our phones are on so we can communicate with each other. We have calculated that if we can just get caught up with this money, we can pay all our bills with the normal income available to us.
