The campaign is technically still OPEN if you intended to donate, but didn't get it. We are being super scrappy trying to make a film for $6K and still hopeful for a grant. If we raise more money, it will add to the quality of the film significantly and allow us to pay our crew closer to a typical wage. Currently, no one "above the line" is getting paid. Additional funding would also cover our post production including sound re-mixing, composer and editor fees, a website and festival submissions. Thanks for helping out!
Friends, I am preparing to make a new short this fall about two women of color who go on a first date/hike and struggle to connect in more ways than one. It's called Magnificent (a working title) and it's a mash-up of two different things that happened to me. Yes, I really did go on a first date with someone involving a drive out of town. And I also went on a hike in the Gorge where things spiraled out of control (no spoilers!). Ultimately, it's about how we try and often fail to connect with ourselves, with each other and with the world around us. I also feel strongly that audiences need to see more queer cinema with plot lines that go beyond coming out or suffering for our sexual identity.
Magnificent promises to be my most interpersonal, most queer and most cinematic film. It's also the first one I've written entirely by myself. It’s a comedy turned drama with a lot of heart featuring the beautiful backdrop of the Pacific Northwest. Making this will be an important step in my path to direct a feature and I'm excited to bring what's on the page to life--with your help!
TEAM
Jasmine Karcey will be the Director of Photography or “DP” as it’s known. Jasmine and I met on the set of Leave No Trace where I was shadowing director Debra Granik and she was on the film crew. We decided earlier this year to make something together and Magnificent was born. Jasmine is an experienced camerawoman, on the path to becoming a cinematographer, but has mostly served in assisting roles on many of the big shows that have come to town from HBO to Netflix. By shooting this film, she’ll get experience and credit that could help her become one of the few women DP’s in town! She’ll also be giving roles to two other women to help them move up as well in their own paths to become a cinematographer including Sika Stanton. Liz Haan will be our grip. Betty Alcaraz is our sound recordist.
Kari Coleman has produced a comedy special for Netflix, tv shows for Vice's tv channel, Viceland, and various other productions for Lance Bangs. She previously assisted Gus Van Sant for seven years. Patrick Schwartz is a seasoned film set guy with lots of connections who is excited to be producing for the first time as well. For post production, my brother, James Jones has agreed to edit. Katie Sawicki will be our composer and Briar Levit is on board to design the poster! It's a stellar group of folks. We'll be continuing to bring more on board, as the date gets closer. We'll be announcing our cast soon.
FUNDING
Money raised will cover permits/fees for shooting in parks, food, very modest pay for crew, additional camera/gear rentals and some of post-production as well. I've applied for a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council though there are no guarantees that we will get it. And Koerner Camera has generously agreed to donate a camera package valued at $2500 for a two-day shoot. The reality is that as an indie filmmaker, I can't make anything without the support of my community. Please consider supporting the team, this project and me!
