Get Your Pushup On

Imagine getting the news that at 36 years of age that you have breast cancer, that it’s aggressive, and that it will require long-term treatment. And then imagine that you are self-employed, with your business making up a large part of your family’s ability to keep food on the table, a family of 3 young girls and husband who is also self-employed. Imagine learning that you have to undergo chemo, radiation, and major surgery that will force you to dissolve that business.

 How would you feel?

I can tell you how Maddy felt when she got this news – terrified.

My name is Cody Bishop, and I own and operate 181 Fitness, a health and fitness studio in Vista, California. On the heel of having just reclaimed her health, Maddy learned about her diagnosis and shared it with me. Maddy started her journey with 181 Fitness as huge PITA (You can google it if you don’t know what that means). I’ve never been grilled about my qualifications as a trainer so much as when I first met Maddy. It took 6 months of convincing for her to finally step foot in the gym, but as soon as she did everything changed.

Having never worked out previously and despising the idea of exercise, she took a risk and trusted me. Over the next 6 months Maddy lost 30lbs, regained a sense of confidence, became a source of inspiration at the gym, and became the strongest version of herself. She even inspired her daughter to start doing squats and pushups at home.

When Maddy let me know the news about her diagnosis I knew that it was my turn to give back to her. See, Maddy didn’t realize, maybe still doesn’t, that it’s people like her that make getting up in the morning at 4:15am worth while. It’s helping forge beacons of change like Maddy, beacons that inspire change in others, that reminds me why I do what I do.

Besides, what’s the point of creating a community if you don’t step up and support one of its members in their greatest time of need?

181 Fitness is calling all North County residents, and beyond, to help us fight for Maddy and Get Your Push-up On. October 24th, from 9am – 12pm, 181 Fitness will host a fun, educational, and inspiring fundraiser to help raise funds to support Maddy and her family during the long challenge that awaits them.

Dealing with a battery of tests, debilitating medical procedures, unforeseen complications, and hassling with insurance coverage all while trying to maintain some sense of normalcy for your family is a difficult task. Add to that a significant loss of income and the need to return to a high-risk job to keep your health benefits, and you have a stressful situation that can be unbearable at times.

Come out to 181 Fitness to learn more about breast cancer, support your community, and have a blast.

We’ll have a silent auction, food and beverages, as well as a sponsored push-up challenge where you can pledge a dollar amount towards the number of push-ups you complete within a 90 sec period.
