Mackenzie's fight is far from over. A donation of any kind would be greatly appreciated. All donations will go towards supporting Jason and Brooke while Mackenzie continues her fight at McMaster Hosiptal.

MACKENZIE'S STORY
Mackenzie was born on February 14, 2002.  Labour was induced because the size of her head in utero was 40 weeks but her body was 38 weeks and delivery would have been much harder.

She was born with Spina Bifida (Myelomeningocele-defect of the backbone and spinal cord where the spine, spinal cord and spinal canal don’t form or close normally), Hydrocephalus (Accumulation of fluid in the brain which can cause brain defects) and Chari II Malformation (the base of the brain and brain stem are abnormal).

In Mackenzie’s first 48 hours of life she went through 2 surgeries: 24 hours old she had a VP Shunt (A tube inserted into the ventricles of the brain to allow excess fluid to drain properly), and at 48 hours she had her Spinal Cord re inserted and had her back closed surgically.

At about 1 year of age little Mackenzie was very ill.  We discovered that her shunt was malfunctioning and she spent 3+ months in McMaster and had several shunt revisions (replacement of part or entire shunt).  We also discovered that her Cerebralspinal fluid was very infected and there was a possibility that she wouldn’t be with us much longer.  Thankfully her amazing neurologist got it figured out and Miss Mack would be healthy once again and home with us.

At 3 years of age she began to have issues with her bladder and her kidneys.  Her urologist suggested that he do a procedure called a Vesicostomy (opening between the skins surface and bladder to allow urine to drain freely) and to re implant her Ureters to try and let her kidneys and bladder grow.  After about a year a half the vesicostomy was surgically closed and Mackenzie was now doing in and out catheters to void her bladder.

Miss Mack has also had surgery for a Mitrofanoff (where the appendix creates a tube between the skin and the bladder to insert catheters to void) with this surgery she also had a bladder augmentation.  After this surgery, she was in a great deal of pain and spent almost 3 weeks in hospital.  After this surgery came her Cecostomy (Bowel surgery).  A year ago, to the day Mackenzie went to McMaster on an emergency basis as she had Osteomyelitis (infection of the bone) in her right foot.  Originally, they thought she would lose her right foot but they were able to save the whole foot.

On April 20 Brooke and her Mother Rita rushed Mackenzie to McMaster Emergency.  Mackenzie was having a hard time breathing and couldn’t move because of major back pain.  McMaster got her into a room immediately and rushed her up to the ICU where she was intubated and put on a ventilator and a machine to do the breathing for her.  On April 22nd, Brooke and Jason watched helplessly outside their daughter’s ICU room while doctors and nurses rushed all around trying to prepare Mackenzie for surgery.  Mackenzie had become very ill and SEPTIC.  Saturday the 22nd we came very dangerously close to losing her.  Mackenzie is still on a ventilator and heavily sedated she hasn’t opened her eyes since Thursday.  She has 2 IV’s and a central line in her neck.  She has a chest tube to get all the poison out around her lung, another tube around her kidney and another one in the kidney.  Her kidneys were shutting down and she has pneumonia in her right lung.
Mackenzie now has an EColi bug which is resistant to a lot of antibiotics.  And will be in the hospital for 3-4 weeks hooked up to I.V through a PIC line in ICU.  Please help ease the financial burden on Jason and Brooke so they can focus on Mackenzie
