The horribly tragic Camp Fire destroyed every structure in the charming all American town of Paradise, California. My nephew Kyle and his wife Kala, in their mid-twenties, bought their first house earlier this year in Paradise. Sadly, all that remains of it now is the fireplace. They were forced out of their home on Thursday morning, racing for their lives and escaping through a wall of fire. Thankfully they are safe. They managed to take only their dog, their computers, and a change of clothing.  But they still have their youthful energy and eternal optimism.

Kyle and Kala personify "the good guys" - the salt of the earth. They are always the first to show up and work tirelessly to help anyone in need. They never stop striving to make this world a better place.

Insurance will help make them whole to some extent. Regrettably, however, I know from personal experience that insurance companies are disinclined to pay claims. Attorneys are often required to obtain an equitable settlement. In my own family's recent experience, our legal fees for this purpose have exceeded $75,000.

My mother used to say we often can't help those who help us, but we can instead "pass on the favor." If you would like to help Kyle and Kala rebuild their lives, I know that they would be enormously grateful.

Thank you ever so much for considering them.

We found this photograph of our home and can confirm with our own eyes that our house is gone. The chimney still stands and we can see our kitchen oven in the rubble, along with the brand new Rofco bread oven in the back of the house. You can also see where the tracks for the garage door was. That air conditioning unit used to be on the roof. This sight just takes our breath away.

Dearest friends and family members -

This last Thursday, we fled from the #campfire in Butte County with just the clothes on our backs. As the fire ranged on, we started to prepare for the worst. On Friday, it was confirmed that our home was destroyed by the fire and now only the chimney remains as a haunting sort of gravestone amongst the rubble that was our lives. Only one house on our block remains.

Our family comprises a husband named Kyle, a wife named Kala, and a sweet sheepdog pup named Roxy. We are 27 years old. We purchased this house (our first home) in February of this year and were married in March of 2016. Kyle works in agriculture lending in thriving Northern California, while Kala bakes bread, writes for a number of local publications, and helps small business owners make meaningful connections through digital marketing. (Roxy enthusiastically gathers all the pine cones, sticks, and balls and gives lots of kisses.) We are thankful that we have each other and so thankful to have family living nearby but the road ahead is long and full of unknowns that we will discover along the way.

A shining light that pierces the darkness of this reality is the warmth and love we have received from you. We have been overwhelmed with figuring out next steps but we’ve also been overwhelmed with generosity and kindness. We have so many people who love us and so very much to be thankful for. We survived the fire and our life will be reborn from the ashes.

We cannot be thankful enough to those of you who have helped us. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
