For Love of Amy

Amy Mayben Thomas (46) was getting ready to head out for a movie on New Year’s Day when she suffered her first-ever seizure. After undergoing several rounds of tests for the next 45 days, Amy – a healthy, devoted single mother of a 13-year-old daughter and longtime special education teacher for the McKinney Independent School District – was told in late-February that she has late-stage inoperable brain cancer.

As we post this, Amy is still waiting to learn of treatment options that will help extend her quality of life.  What she is missing most is the job that she was born to do – touching and improving the lives of children. Even from her hospital bed, Amy’s thoughts were with her students and how they would fare for the remainder of the school year without her.

Because Amy missed so many days of school following her seizure and subsequent testing, she’ll be taking unpaid leave from teaching. She does not have short- or long-term disability coverage, and will be struggling to continue to pay her bills.

She purchased her first-ever house on her own last summer just around the corner from her school, and walking distance from her daughter’s school and the church where she is so active, Cottonwood Creek Baptist Church. Despite a looming mortgage and mounting medical bills, Amy was hesitant to ask for help.

But as fiercely independent as she is, Amy will need all the assistance she can get to pay her bills and make ends meet. With no income and the possibility of a difficult treatment schedule on the books, she will be struggling to provide for herself or her daughter and to keep the home she loves so dearly and was so proud to purchase.

Several of Amy’s friends have been wanting to help her in this very challenging time, so a few of her childhood friends decided to launch this campaign so that everyone who cares for Amy can play a role in her fight. All of the funds raised will be transferred directly to her, to pay her medical bills and for her monthly regular expenses for her & her daughter. We will post updates on her treatment and condition as we are able.

Any amount you might be able to give will help Amy make it through this time of need as she works to maintain everyday life for her daughter. Giving to Amy and her daughter financially will mean more to them than words can express. And your prayers for her and her family are equally vital.
Thank you!
