Lyft Driver Robbed/Nearly Killed

Donation protected
Hey everyone, I am looking for help for my boyfriend, Cory. We recently moved back to Denver where we both grew up and have been out of the state for almost 10 years. Being back in the city, Cory has been looking for a job, but in the meantime decided to drive for Lyft and Uber. Early Thursday morning he began his shift when he received a request to drive a Lyft passenger from DTC to approximately Colorado and 6th Ave. Pkwy. He completed the trip around 2am and pulled forward to 7th and Albion St. to text me that his ride had just been dropped off and to wait there for his next ride request.

Only one minute after parking he hears a “tink, tink tink” on the window. It was the sound of metal on glass. He looked up but couldn’t see who or what was outside of his window. Many time homeless people approach the window to ask for money or food, and if you know Cory then you know he will help anyone he comes in contact with and would gladly give someone the last of his change or whatever he has on him.

However, as he inches down his window he is met with a barrel of a gun in his face. His car is surrounded by 3 African American men. “Hey motherf**ker give us everything you got,” the man with the gun shouts at Cory.

Cory said he was in disbelief as this was happening. He was digging through his car looking for anything to give them and hopefully satisfy their demands so they would leave. He was pulling out everything from his console and dash as 4 hands were grabbing everything he pulled out. But this wasn’t enough. The man with the gun pistol whips Cory in the face a few times from what Cory remembers. As he continues to feel around for things to give them, he remembers he has his watch in the door panel and tells them to take it and leave.

They pause for a second and the gun moves away from his head for a second. The armed man says “don't f*** with me or Ill smoke you.” At this point, 2 men are at the window and they have gotten the driver-side door open about 2 inches while the 3rd man is standing in front of his driver headlight.

Cory says he knew at the moment he had to try and get away. While the gun was off his head for a split second, he elbowed the shifter to drive and smashed on the accelerator. At that same exact moment, he heard a “POP” and his hearing was gone and his head was pounding but he is still conscious. He is still not sure if he ran over the one man, but he had escaped.

At this point, he still isn’t sure if he is injured or not, and he is so disoriented that he pulls into the parking lot of a 7-eleven and starts yelling for anyone to call the cops, but nobody would help him. As he gets out of the car to make sure he is not injured he is able to call 911 and the DPD arrive seconds later. He and the officer immediately notice that when Cory’s car door is opened that the bullet was shot point blank at his head and went into the door jam and had been stopped by the last layer of metal before it would have entered the car immediately next to his temple.

The police told Cory that if any one variable would have been different he would have been dead. He was so extremely lucky that a small piece of .2cm thick metal saved him from being shot in the head.

We are still not sure if they caught the men and will be following up with detectives.

Cory was a part of the Lyft rental program and the car is a rental car. Unfortunately it looks like Hertz will be charging Cory the $2500 damage deductible, and Lyft has also deactivated his account during their investigation.

This was Cory’s only source of income at the moment, and it is clear that he is already suffering from PTSD. He is terrified to be in the car, and gets sick to his stomach at the thought of driving alone now, so he would like the take some sort of defense class.

He also needs to go to the doctor to have his hearing checked since he can barely hear and has had a headache leaving him in excruciating pain since the robbery.

The state offers victim assistance, but that will take many days/weeks for Cory to apply for and it only covers medical reimbursements up to a certain amount.

This past year has been extremely tough for both of us as we moved back to Denver after having to leave Los Angeles because we had been living in a house that we found out was covered in extremely high levels of toxic black molds which made us very sick, and now with the robbery, Cory will not have any type of income while he looks for a replacement job.

I know Cory has a hard time asking people for help, so that is why I wanted to make this page. If you know him, you know Cory is caring and compassionate and always willing to help anyone he can, and I know he would greatly appreciate any help now more than ever.

Also, if you have any friends or family that drive for Uber/Lyft, please share this story with them. There have been to many reports recently of similar situations and we want to make sure everyone stays safe.

Thank you!
