A Rescue Dog Who Rescues Dogs

My name is Lovie and I was a dumped dog. I was pregnant and living under a bush in the heat of the summer when Duck Team 6 rescued me and placed me in a foster home where I gave birth to 10 puppies. Eight survived (two girls and six boys). After they were weaned, they were adopted by loving families and my foster family (including my best fur friend Henry) became my fur-ever family. I've lived the good life ever since.

Just two days ago my family was visiting a small Texas town and, by chance, discovered two dogs who were living in a small, feces-filled and fly infested outdoor pen. The dogs were very friendly and happy to see people and be talked to and touched. They were also very grateful for the food and clean water we provided. My family talked to neighbors and learned that the homeowner had not been seen in several weeks, the dogs spent 24 hours in the outdoor pen, regardless of the rain or heat, and they relied on the kindness of neighbors for food and water. We had a hard time sleeping that night because all we could think about were the two lonely dogs in that small, dirty, stinky pen. The next day, my parents were able to reach the homeowner who had moved six hours away six weeks before and for a variety of reasons, including health and financial, had not been able to come back to retrieve the dogs. The homeowner agreed to let us take the dogs. We loaded them into the car and drove home to Dallas. We gave them baths, put flea medicine on them and found a foster who agreed to take both of them in so they could stay together. (As you might expect, they are very attached to each other.) Next week Ariat and Tonka will visit the vet for shots, rabies vaccinations, heartworm tests, fecal tests and then spaying. If the heartworm tests are positive, which is common in dogs who have lived in such squalid conditions, then heartworm treatment will begin.

Word of the unplanned, successful dog rescue spread quickly in the small town and today my family was contacted and asked to help another dog. She was abandoned and decided to make her home at a local shop about two years ago. She is very friendly and the people at the shop care for her and give her food and water, but they cannot offer her a home Because the area is not fenced in, she is tethered to a line that runs between two trees. The people at the shop want her to have a better life and, after learning of Ariat and Tonka’s rescue, reached out to us. My family agreed to go back to the small Texas town to get her and bring her to Dallas to try to find her a home. We plan on picking her up in two days and bringing her home, giving her a bath and then taking her to the vet for vetting (shots, rabies vaccination, heartworm tests, fecal tests, and, spaying if she has not already been spayed. If the heartworm tests are positive, then heartworm treatment will begin.) As soon as we have pictures of her, we will post them.
