New Trailer for Love Beyond Walls

In 2013 Terence and his wife Cecilia started an organization called Love Beyond Walls that has reached over 14,000 homeless and impoverished people in and around the city of Atlanta. According to Terence, “We exist to make known the stories that are experienced, but never heard about. We aim to raise awareness about stories that need relief, and mobilize an army of people who would dare to get involved in those stories and care! We are dreamers of solutions.”
This summer, in accordance with Love Beyond Walls’ mission, Terence began his March Against Poverty (MAP16), walking the 648 miles from Atlanta, GA to Washington, DC to help raise awareness for poverty and homelessness in our country. I heard about Terence’s story through friends at our church and was told that he was having some difficulty with foot pain. I specialize in orthopaedic and sports physical therapy and I knew that if I could talk with Terence I could help. I was connected and we spoke on the phone for 20 minutes about different stretches and a few modifications he could make during his 15 mile a day average.
I was so inspired by his story that I drove 6 hours to meet him when he was traveling through Greensboro, NC to do some therapy on his injured ankle. I spent an hour with Terence and I followed every step of his journey since.
About a week ago Terence found out that his shower trailer was stolen from his property and Love Beyond Walls home base in College Park, GA. This was the trailer that he uses to allow those who are homeless to take a shower and bathe, showing them the simple kindness that we all deserve. It is a large part of his ministry and while he was disappointed all he could think about was how it was the person who stole the trailer that he was walking for; someone who was probably so desperate for money that they resorted to theft to survive. So he kept walking. It was at this point that I knew I had to do something.
It’s not right that Terence Lester walks 648 miles to raise awareness for poverty and then has to come back home and raise funds to purchase a piece of equipment that he already had. It doesn’t make sense. It is for this reason that I am writing this. I am trying to raise funds to purchase Terence a new trailer so that when he ends his MAP16 on Saturday Oct 15th at the MLK memorial in Washington, DC that he does not have to worry about coming home to Atlanta to disappointment.
In my eyes he is a revolutionary, one who sees injustice and instead of talking about solutions he decided to ACT and BE a solution for those who have no voice. He is an inspiring man and I am going to do everything in my power raise the funds for a new trailer so that he continue to serve those less fortunate than me. I have never been homeless or lived in poverty, but a 20 minute phone call with Terence Lester has changed me and allowed me to realize that in the game of life as we all try to climb higher and higher up the ladder, sometimes we need to stop, reach back, and help lift others to the top of the mountain with us.
