Since 1999, we have maintained our independent SOCCER-SPAIN website for English speaking football fans from all over the world. During this time hundreds of thousands of readers have visited our pages to find out all the news on Spanish football, and we pride ourselves that our site is detailed and easy to navigate, with accessible data going back to when we started, and before. Our focus has always been different from other sites, offering information (as far as our resources allow us) on all sides of Spanish football at club, youth and full international level, with rational, unbiased reporting rather than sensational sound-bites, and with a little bit of humour to brighten up the day for our readers.
Although the site is run on a voluntary basis, we still have a lot of costs for web-hosting, design and other running expenses. In order to finance this we set up a small on-line shop selling football kits and match tickets, and have allowed limited advertising, without swamping our site with too many annoying adverts. Where possible we have tried to apply an ethical policy on this, and have allowed free publicity for causes which we support, such as children and animal protection groups, and charitable organizations. Unfortunately an attempt to ask readers to subscribe a modest fee to access our web met with little response, and last summer we decided to cancel our pay-wall and revert back to a free site.
Although our site was pretty unique when we started, since then many bigger competitors have entered the market, and our readership and consequently our revenues have dropped. We have always tried to keep up to date with technology in order to counter this, but with the decrease in income this is proving to be more and more difficult.
We have therefore decided to launch this crowd-funding appeal to raise an initial €10,000 to help us meet our ongoing financial commitments, and to adapt our pages to other devices, including mobile phones and tablets, in order to reach a wider market. We know times are tight, but all we are asking for is a small contribution from those of you who regularly visit our pages, for example €10, €20, €50..., the price of a couple of pints of beer or a meal. Any amount, however small, would be gratefully appreciated.
