Please Help with School Fees & Supplies

I am organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my friend Lucy Thairu and her two children.  They live in Nairobi, Kenya.  They are a great family with big dreams, not so different from most of us.

I met Lucy several years ago when she came to work for me as a freelance writer on an Africa project.  The project came to an end in October of 2019 and Lucy has not been able to secure work since then. Lucy always impressed me with how she was able to take a difficult subject and write about it in a way that caused people to pay attention and reconsider their opinion on that subject. I’ve learned that she has a real passion for making a difference in this world and no matter her own personal situation, she is determined to help others.

We have had many online chats, sometimes in her early morning and my late-night, or my early morning and her late-night, because you see, Lucy lives in Nairobi, Kenya and I live in Alabama, US.  During our chats, I’ve tried to encourage her and build her up in her faith to stay strong and keep believing that God will provide.  The funny thing is that she has done just that for me.   Lucy is the type of person that you know God placed in your life as a reminder of his love and faithfulness.   I am thankful that our paths crossed.

For a while now I have felt that I wanted to do something more for Lucy.   I am not a wealthy person so I can’t 'fix' her current situation but I can give a little and do a little to help her.  One of the little things I can do is tell her story and ask other people like you if they would be willing to give a little and do a little to share her story.  Together, we may be able to give enough and do enough to make a real difference.

Lucy adopted her two children when they were babies (there’s that heart at work again).  They needed a family and Lucy opened her heart and home to be their mother.   Let me tell you a little bit about Lorato and Tshepiso.

The name Lorato means ‘love’ in Setswana and has origins in Botswana which is where Lorato is from.   She is 16 and attends a Catholic high school, Beatitudes Girls School.   She is form 4 which is similar to 11th grade as we know it here in the US.   She is great in History and Languages and has wanted to follow human pathology but she keeps changing her mind.   Her mum thinks she would make a good human rights lawyer because she has a very strong sense of justice.

The name Tshepiso means ‘fulfilled hope’.   He is 13 and attends a Catholic school, St. Martin Duporres.  In Kenya, students must complete 8 years of primary and then they go to highschool.  Tshepiso is a standard 7 in primary school which I think is similar to eighth grade in the states.  He is great at  academics and wants to be an engineer.   His mum says he loves soccer (maybe too much) and plays on the school team.

With just a little help, Lucy, Lorato, and Tshepiso would be able to pay this term's school fees, get textbooks, buy school uniforms, and maybe have a little extra for something unexpected.

Give a little, do a little,  and make a big difference.   I hope you will consider giving from your heart.  Your gift, no matter the size, will be gratefully received and very much appreciated.
